WELCOME TO THE 2017 TIE GLOBAL CM RETREAT

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Retreat Committee, the TiE Global Board of Trustees and the TiE Global staff, welcome to our 19th
Annual Charter Member Retreat that’s taking place from August 3-6, 2017. At this year’s Retreat, let’s collectively
make memories in the beautiful and historic city of Cape Town, South Africa. More importantly, old friends from
across the globe get a chance to rekindle friendships, and many new friendships are waiting to be made.
Cape Town is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for
immigrants and expatriates to South Africa. In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by
both the American New York Times and the British Daily Telegraph. Located on the shore of Table Bay, Cape Town
was first developed by the Dutch East India Company as a supply station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India,
and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in
South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good
Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony
Three spectacular evening events await you, starting with a reception and dinner at the Table Bay Hotel with the
Mayor of Cape Town joining us. The next night is our own exclusive party at the Gold Restaurant where we will be
exposed to the finest African cuisine and culture. We also have Zelda Le Grange sharing her memories of the time
spent working with the iconic Nelson Mandela. The final night is our Awards Gala at the Westin Hotel ballroom
followed by one of South Africa's leading DJs to entertain you through the night.
For both adults and children we have organized a range of fun filled activities and food options. So leave your worries
behind; sample a great fusion of Indian and African cuisine with great wines, charge up your cameras and dress up for
the final gala banquet. Most importantly get set for a lot of fun – and a little business with lots of networking.
Finally, the usual tourist advice: please do keep your passports and valuables in the safe custody of your rooms and
feel free to contact either of us if you need anything at all while you are here.

ZELDA LA GRANGE
Former Private Secretary To Nelson Mandela
At the Cape Town CM Retreat, you’ll have a chance to meet and converse with Zelda La Grange, who features
among the "Who's who List in South Africa". La Grange spent more time than anyone in the company of Nelson
Mandela since he became the first black president of South Africa in 1994. (Britannica)
Zelda la Grange (born 29 October 1970) is a former private secretary to Nelson Mandela. La Grange was born
in Pretoria, South Africa. She completed a 3-year National Diploma at the Tshwane University of Technology. From
1994 until 1996, she served as a typist for Mary Mxadana, private secretary to Nelson Mandela, the newly elected
post-apartheid President of South Africa. In 1996, she was promoted to assistant private secretary, and in 1999 she
was again promoted to Private Secretary to the Office of the President. She was a founding staff member of the
Nelson Mandela Foundation, which served as post-Presidential office for Nelson Mandela.
The story of Zelda la Grange, a young Afrikaner girl who rose from middle-class obscurity, and a blindly ignorant
apartheid past, to win the affection and trust of a black man who was once the most feared enemy of her family and
her volk and is now, by global consent (volk not excluded) The Late Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest political
figures in the world helped end the country’s apartheid system of racial segregation and ushered in a peaceful
transition to majority rule. Mandela was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993 for his efforts.
La Grange began working for Mandela, first as a typist, and went on to become known as "Mandela's rock" (The
Guardian), his secretary and closest aide during his presidency and retirement: La Grange was not only his secretary,
but his butler, aide-de-camp, spokesperson, travelling companion, confidante and - as she put it, and he agrees -
honorary granddaughter, growing ever closer to him from the day she began work as an anonymous typist in the
presidential office in 1994. (Wikipedia) In an interview with a Women's magazine, she says about Mandela,
"Forgiveness is a choice. He had to decide if he was going to forgive. That was the greatest gift of Nelson
Mandela."(Female First).

AJ Patel is the Founder and First Charter Member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneur), an organization created to assist
entrepreneurs and startup companies in the Silicon Valley area. Today, TiE has grown to become an all-inclusive,
global organization, which welcomes entrepreneurs of all ethnic backgrounds, from nations around the world.
It was AJ’s idea to forge the seeds of the institution, activate the founding members and provide the grounding vision
for the organization, along with other founding members of TiE Silicon Valley - Suhas Patil, Kanwal Rekhi and
others. TiE stalwarts such as Late CK Prahalad, Desh Deshpande, Narayanan Murthy, Nandan Nilekani joined TiE in
the early days and as Brand Ambassadors further spread the mission or TiE to other parts of the world.
AJ was born in India, and raised in Uganda. Patel has nurtured a love for Africa and its wildlife. Since 1994, he began
taking charter members of TiE to see the animals of Africa, one of the greatest spectacles on the face of the Earth.
During his frequent trips, he has observed that both the land and its animals are showing signs of stress. For over 20
years, AJ was active as an entrepreneur, mentor, and business leader as the Founder, CEO and Chairman of Odyssey
Enterprises, Inc. Since 2007, he decided to focus his efforts on Conservation and protection of wildlife reserves in
Africa, and took on the role as Chairman of the Hasla Mara Wildlife Conservation Foundation.

Dr. Suhas Patil is the founder and retired Chairman of Cirrus Logic, a leading semiconductor company in the USA. Suhas was
invited to be the First President of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE) in 1992 when TiE was still a fledgling entity. As the founder of
Cirrus Logic, one of the most influential integrated circuit (IC) companies during the 1980s and ‘90s. Suhas was a pioneer in
changing rules of the game in the $300 billion semiconductor industry by abandoning the tradition of building proprietary
fabrication shops (fabs) costing hundreds of millions of dollars, and becoming fabless. When the Fabless Semiconductor
Association (FSA) was established in 1994, there were only three fabless companies—Cirrus Logic, Adaptec, and Xilinx—each
with revenues in excess of $250 million. Today, fabless has become the norm, and industry pundits have acknowledged the
financial success of fabless companies, such as Nvidia, Broadcom, and Xilinx, that produce competitively-priced products,
benefiting consumers and driving the global market for computing devices.
Prior to starting Cirrus Logis, Suhas was Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an
Associate Professor of Computer Science at University of Utah. Suhas grew up in Jamshedpur, India. He received his B. Tech.
(Honors) in Electronics and Electrical Communications from IIT-Kharagpur, in 1965. He earned his MSEE (1967) and Doctor of
Science (1970) degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT. In 1995 Suhas was first IIT-alumnus to be conferred an Honorary
