12. Expert Opinion
12.1 Subsea UK
Subsea UK is the UK’s subsea industry body, acting on behalf of the supply chain to increase
business opportunities in the North Sea and further afield. Neil Gordon is the chief executive of
Subsea UK. He has had a long career in the subsea sector, including nearly a decade spent working
as a commercial diver in the North Sea. Visiongain would like to thank Mr Gordon for his insightful
comments.
12.1.1 Neil Gordon and Subsea UK
Visiongain: First of all, can you tell me a bit about your personal history and what brought you to
Subsea UK?
Neil Gordon: I initially trained as a commercial diver and spent eight years carrying out numerous
diving assignments in the UK and Norwegian waters involving new construction projects, pipeline
surveys, welding and inspection. I have over 25 years' management experience in director and
business development roles, combined with over 15 years in the subsea industry.
Prior to joining Subsea UK, I spent four years managing the National Hyperbaric Centre which
included project-managing saturation diving operations and hyperbaric weld trials. I developed the
subsea safety training and consultancy aspect of the business, where I regularly lectured to subsea
engineers and delivered a range of training courses both in the UK and overseas.
My career has seen me travel the globe, working in India, the Middle East, Africa and Brazil. I have
also worked with the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers’ diving operations sub-
committee on client representative training and competency for subsea projects. I was also an active
member of the IMCA diving safety, medical, technical and training committee.
Given my background in subsea and my desire to contribute to the amazing success story that is the
UK’s subsea sector, when the organisation was looking for a new CEO in 2011, I was at the right
stage in my career and eager to play my part.
Visiongain: How does Subsea UK represent its members and what does it offer the UK subsea sector
as a whole?

13.1.1 Aker Solutions Organisation and Services
Aker Solutions is an oil and gas industry service, product and systems provider. Activities include
engineering, design and technology provision. Aker Solutions is active in many countries globally,
including Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. Aker Solutions’ business
areas are divided into subsea, drilling technologies, umbilicals and process systems in the product
solutions sector, and maintenance, modifications and operations, and oilfield services and marine
assets in the field-life solutions sector.
13.1.2 Aker Solutions Regional Focus
Aker Solutions is active in the North Sea, Asia-Pacific and Brazil. Within these markets, Aker Solutions
is particularly active in Norway. The company has built manufacturing capacity in Brazil to meet
demand, as well as moving offices to Asia Pacific to be able to provide capacity in both shallow and
deepwater fields. Aker Solutions has expressed interest in expanding into the Arctic, as well as Sub-
Saharan Africa and North America. It has been involved in some of the largest projects in Norway,
such as the Ekofisk project and the Ă…sgard field.
Some of the key subsea production and processing (P&P) systems projects are documented in the
below table. As can be seen, there have been a large proportion of contract wins in both Norway and
West Africa.
