In 1066, King Edward the Confessor of England died without an heir, leaving the kingdom without a clear successor. Two candidates emerged: Harold Godwinson, the late king's brother-in-law, who claimed Edward named him king on his deathbed; and William, Duke of Normandy, who asserted Edward had promised him the throne and that Harold had sworn to support his claim. This led to conflict over the vacant English throne.

was the late king’s brother-in -law.
Harold Claimed that he had been
given the crown on Edward’s death
bed.
He was an experienced warrior and
had been earl of Wessex for many
years. But he was believed to have
murdered Edward’s brother.

had promised him the crown of England when
Edward died.
He also claimed that Harold Godwinson had
sworn to support his claim to the throne.
William said Harold had sworn on the
bones of a saint to help William become
the next king of England.

inhereted the throne of England after his
father’s death.
He was a bad ruler , and he wasted the
money of treasure. His most important
problem was with the archbishop of
Canterbury and because of this he was
unsuccessful.

died in a hunting accident and as his brother
Robert was in the Crusade, He went to
Westminister where he was crowned Kig of
England.
However he was not only conquered England
but also Normandy by defeating Robert.

was put in question because of her fight with
her father.
So Stephen of Blois appeared in the scene.
He was Henry’s nephew

17. atilda invaded England and her fighting led to
a terrible civil war in which villages were
destroyed and many people were killed.
Neither side could win, finally they agreed
Stephen to be king and Matilda’s son the next
successor.
