RIP cigarettes may not reduce the risk of cigarette-ignited fires on soft furnishings like mattresses according to a study by the CPSC. The study tested various cigarette brands, both RIP and non-RIP, and found that RIP cigarettes did not consistently demonstrate fewer cases of substrate smoldering or more full cigarette burns compared to non-RIP cigarettes. Additionally, results from standard cigarette ignition tests did not predict performance on mattress-like materials. Therefore, RIP cigarettes may not warrant changes to existing flammability standards addressing cigarette ignition risks.
