Analysis of the opening of dawn of the dead
1. Analysis of the opening of Dawn of the Dead
The film starts with the Universal logo but instead of having the traditional music
set to it, it has an eerie minor key sound with immediately put the viewer on
edge and waiting for something to happen. The dialogue is very important in this
opening sequence as it gives hint to what is happening for example when the film
stars the main character who is a nurse is talking to her boss about a patient that
came in to hospital with a bite injury and how he is now in I.C.U. these are the
first few lines in the film and it already mentions a zombie outbreak which links
in to the eerie music at the star.
After the conversation the main character goes to find the patient and as she
does this the hospital intercom says “Security to admittance” this makes the
viewer think about if zombies may have caused this. As the main character
leaves the hospital another patient is wheeled in front of the camera showing a
bite mark on his neck a typical thing that zombies are known for.
2. When she gets in her car and starts to drive home a news report is on saying that
“This is not an isolated incident” then she turns it of and put on the song “to have
a nice day” which is ironic because the audience knows what is about to happen.
After the main character comes home she falls asleepand in the morning comes a
slow zoom camera shot is used to show something creeping up to the door and
when it opens a shallow focus is used to blur the figure in the doorway to add to
the mystery and make the scene more intense. When the main characters family
is attacked and infected she escapes the house and drives off to see her own
town going to hell this is a powerful scene for the viewers to see which is perfect
for the horror convention.
