The document discusses water scarcity and its causes. It notes that while water covers most of the Earth's surface, only 3% is freshwater and available water resources are being depleted. Water scarcity is caused by both natural factors like drought as well as human factors such as overexploitation, excessive water usage, and pollution. It affects over a billion people and has negative consequences for health, food supply, and achievement of development goals. Solutions proposed include improved water management, conservation efforts, and use of non-conventional water sources.

The document discusses water resources and the need for conservation. It notes that 97% of water is ocean water which is unusable for humans. Of the remaining 3%, most is locked in ice sheets. Only 0.7% is available as freshwater, with 0.66% as groundwater and 0.03% in rivers and lakes. Due to population growth and industrialization, demand for water is rising while water levels are decreasing, creating a need for conservation practices like rainwater harvesting and modern irrigation methods.

Water scarcity occurs when there is insufficient available water to meet water demand. It can be due to either economic or physical factors. Economically, some populations lack access to safe water due to lack of resources or infrastructure, while physically, some areas simply do not have enough water to meet demand due to climate or geography. Water scarcity affects health, life, agriculture and causes diseases. It is estimated that one in four deaths under age 5 are due to water-related disease and 80% of illnesses are caused by unsafe water. Water scarcity also threatens one quarter of the global population and over 10% consume wastewater irrigated foods which can transmit disease.
Rain Water Harvesting - Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering D6Z
Rain water harvesting is an important way to conserve water resources for the future. As populations and water usage increase, groundwater levels are declining due to overuse. Rain water harvesting helps replenish groundwater by collecting rainwater and allowing it to percolate back into the water table. It has many benefits like increasing water availability, reducing soil erosion and flood risks. While all rainwater cannot be captured, understanding factors like catchment area, rainfall patterns, and runoff coefficients can help estimate the potential for rain water harvesting in a given location. Rain water harvesting is vital for ensuring adequate water resources for the future.

Clean, safe drinking water is scarce. Today, nearly 1 billion people in the developing world don't have access to it.
