History
Prior to 1994, there were more than 350 college
programs inside U.S. prisons. In 1994, Congress
abolished Pell grants for inmates, and New York
State followed course, eliminating all college
degree programs at New York State prisons.
Based on evidence that education transforms
lives and greatly reduces recidivism, Hudson
Link for Higher Education in Prison was formed
in 1998, by a consortium of college educators
and community leaders, to restore the
opportunity for college study to incarcerated
men and women. From inception, Hudson Link
has been entirely privately funded and requires
contributions to continue this work.
College Program
In partnership with our various degree granting
institutions, Hudson Link’s college program is the
core of our endeavors. Hudson Link currently
maintains active partnerships with the following
academic institutions: Mercy Collge, Nyack College,
Siena College, SUNY-Sullivan, Vassar College.
Alumni Re-entry Support Program
Hudson Link assists our graduates as they transition
back into society. In partnership with other re-entry
organizations Hudson Link provides pre-employment
resources for our alumni. These include but are not
limited to, resume writing and interview skills, job
search and arranging appropriate internship
opportunities.
Programs
Pre-College Program
Hudson Link’s pre-college program is designed to
meet students at their present academic levels and
prepare them for college level study. Our program
assists students by giving them a level playing field
to excel in the higher education forum. This is
accomplished by offering preparatory classes in the
core disciplines of English, Math, and Essay Writing.
Executive Director
Sean Pica, Executive Director of Hudson Link
for the past eight years, is a nationally
recognized expert on Prison Education. Under
his leadership, Hudson Link has grown from a
65 student college program operating inside one
prison, Sing Sing Correctional Facility, to
approximately 319 students enrolled in
college programs at five New York State
correctional facilities.
