How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
To discuss how our finished product represents
certain social groups and how they compare to real
media products
Question 2:
2. In our opening 2 minutes we didn't really use that
many social groups
We used only 2 characters, however they
represent different ages and genders
Our media product was of the thriller genre, and
our characters are conventional for this genre
3. Our female character is in their late teens, as is our target audience
In thrillers, the young is conventionally represented as innocent and vulnerable and are often
the victim
In our media product, we stuck to this convention of making the young character the victim
She is being followed by the 'villain' and seems unaware - adding to the innocent
representation
In thrillers, young adults are often part of the plot, and in most cases seem to be the victim
Such as the film 'Prom Night' which is about a group of
teenagers who end up the victims
Also the 'scream' series, in which there are a string of young,
vulnerable victims
AgeYoung:
4. Traditionally in thrillers, the perpetrator is often an older
individual, who is seen to have more power over the younger
victim
Although the actor was young, we portrayed them as an older
character as this is a convention of a thriller, which we chose
to keep
Older characters, normally middle aged, are often seen as the
'villain' as they have more control and are stronger, both
physically and emotionally
This can be seen in 'The Lovely Bones', in
which the murderer is a middle aged man
who prays on young girls
AgeOlder:
5. Females are often the victims in thrillers
Weaker, more vulnerable
We also used a female as our victim
Previous female victim, seen in the newspaper
article we created showing that we used two
females as victims
Our female character is being followed by the male
predator, unaware that he's there and his intentions for
her, this helps portray her as vulnerable
The pictures that the stalker has of the victim again make her seem
defenseless as she has been unaware of being followed
GenderFemale:
6. Males are often the predator
Physically stronger, threatening, dangerous
This can be seen in the end scene, and throughout with the 'flashes' which sets the
scene and the background of his previous crimes - newspapers, hair, photographs
In our production, the predator is also portrayed as male, as is the stereotype - this is
represented mainly through the costume, the mans baggy coat, hat and leather
gloves
These costumes also aid in adding to the mystery as they are baggy and
the hat is obscuring their face
This can be seen in the film 'The Silence of the Lambs', in which the main
antagonist is Hannibal Lector, an incredibly intelligent serial killer who
murders his victims and eats them. In every moment of the film,
you get a feel of just how despicable the character is,
he is represented as an older male, and therefore
seems more authoritative and frightening
GenderMale:
7. How Mise en scene helps represents the social groups
Following the victim
Seen in the shadow scenes
Keeps their head down - adds a sense of mystery
Filmed through the thorny bush - suggests stalking,
watchfulness and a harshness about the character
Shed scene - pulling curtain across window to
prevent people seeing - suggests something to hide
Images following this helps sets the scene of the
characters nature
Queen of hearts card - signature left on victim -
unable to kill girl following, puts card down in shed
Also represented as a man from the newspaper ,
referred to as ‘King of Hearts’, implying he is male
Helps portray him as planning, smart, calculative,
psychotic, stalker, serial killer
Conventional of the thriller genre
The victim is seen to be walking home
Unaware of being followed
Signified by shadows on
wall
Unaware – Doesn’t turn to
look or speed up
Turning around at front door to see if
someone is coming
Photos taken in various
locations by 'bad guy'
- Victim is unaware
Helps portray her as weak, innocent
and vulnerable
Conventional of the thriller
genre
Victim Antagonist
8. Although we didn't address a lot of social groups, we used
the mains ones of the thriller genre; the young female
victim and older male antagonist
We used the stereotypes of these characters as we felt
they were most effective to portray our genre in 2 minutes
We used costume, acting and mise en scene to portray
these characters in a way we a believed would be most
effective
These stereotypes are expected by audiences to signify a
certain character of a film, for these reason, we stuck to
what was expected in a thriller so that the aim of the film
was clearly communicated! and most effective
