 Are staff screened? Backgrounds checked?
 What kind of care standards do they have?
 Availability of staff?
 What if the caregiver does not show up?
 Will there be one or many aides?
 Part of a national organization, or local?

7. HOME HEALTH CARE
 To be covered by Medicare, patient must be:
Homebound
Have skilled nursing need
Get a doctor’s order
 Nurses (RN and LVN), PT’s, OT’s, HHA’s, Social
Workers
 Covered by Medicare and/or private
insurance/long term care insurance

8. SENIOR APARTMENTS
 Apartment for individual or couple
 No entrance fee
 Provides meals, housekeeping and social/recreational
opportunities
 Must be mobile and able to care for one’s self
 Usually constructed with convenience/safety devices
 Usually no health facilities

9. BOARD AND CARE
 Six bed facility – in a house
 Licensed facilities
 Provide all meals, housekeeping, and social
programs
 Services include bathing, dressing and other
routine functions as required

 Typically has an entrance fee and can be expensive

13. PRACTICAL HINTS FOR SELECTING
 Develop a worksheet to compare facilities
 Physical plant/safety
 Administrator/staff qualifications
 Emergency policies
 Recreational services/social events
 Talk with others who live there
 Look at state survey (if applicable)

14. VENTURA COUNTY AREA HOUSING
AUTHORITY
 Public housing:
 355 units in Ventura County
 Last public housing facility built in 1988
 Section 8:
 30% of income goes to rent, AHA pays remainder
 Number of vouchers are capped, currently a long waiting list.
Waiting list has not been opened since 2008

15. SUBSIDIZED SENIOR HOUSING
 Section 42 of IRS code
 Caps rents, subsidized by city & state grants and federal
tax credits
 Income must be within a window dictated by law
 Majority of affordable housing in the US is under this
program

16. ADULT DAY CARE/ADULT HEALTH DAY
CARE
 Two flavors: Social Model and Medical Model
 Social Model
 Physical, mental and emotional stimulation
 Nutritious meals
 Trained staff
 Socialization and peer support
 Safe and compassionate environment
 Transportation
 Medical Model
 Same as social model, and includes:
 Skilled nursing services
 Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy
 Memory care
