Cones were used to
signify what

responsible for a
quality defect.
Managers could see
at a glance where

caused. Corrective

quicker when it was
visible to all.

Editor's Notes
I have had the opportunity to visit MaterialHandling manufacturer and the first time I was there I saw these cones on the top of lift trucks. Next to this area was a shelf with stacks of multicolored cones and key indicating a department for each color of cone. A cone was placed on the truck when a defect was discovered. The color of the cone indicated the department responsible for the defect. A key was displayed so that at a glance you quickly see what departments were responsible for what defects. I came back a few months later only to discover an enhancement to this visual system.
The next time I visited the plant their visual systems that got even better! Before the cones that were not being used were stacked one on top of each other. Now you can evaluate the status of quality even faster.
