- Over the next 20 minutes or so, we are going to learn how to Make Your Data Stand Out. We will be having questions at the end of the presentation and will also email a copy of this presentation to each attendee. Now, I am a highly competitive guy and I always laugh a little bit when I play games/sports with people when they say, lets just practice, have fun and not keep scoreโฆ ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!? Keeping score is essential, it gives you feedback on whether you are doing a good job or not. It helps keep order and structure in not just sports but also in industry.Could you imagine what the Super Bowl would be like if they didnโt keep track of the score? Same thing goes for your facility. Over the next 20 or so minutes we are going to go through ways to improve your scoreboards. Most facilities KPI/Production boards look like they are out of a little league baseball diamond. Lets turn them into Jumbotrons!
- Now batting, number 2, Derek Jeter. Whenever anyone walks up to the plate at Yankee Stadium there was a great announcer by the name of Bob Shepherd that would call out the player walking to the plate and identify him. Reggie Jackson referred to him as the โVoice of God.โ His job was to announce the person walking up to the plate at Yankee Stadium.While you do not have a Bob Shepherd, you should announce to the whole facility who owns the board. Do this by placing a picture of the owner on the board itself
- Home is where the heart is. This statement is nice because it reminds us of all the great qualities of home. I often hear people talking about how one of the best features about their house is itโs constant. Things are usually where they belong which makes it easy to find. You always know where the toaster is at, you know where the stock pot is for making spaghetti sauce or at least where the microwave is if you arenโt the cooking type.
- The idea is there is a home for your utensils/items at your house. Make homes for your document. Each of these signs show a specific spot for current information. Itโs easy to tell that if the future schedule for the Technologist was missing because the spot would be empty. Without the border and label, there is a chance no one would see it missing. So always create a nice home for your information. It will thank you!
- Money talks right? Well donโt let your money walk! Thatโs what happens when you pay through the nose for some of the most basic scoreboards. If you ask an outside source to create them for you, your money will walk even faster out the door. So that is why we create visuals ourselves. Itโs to limit the amount of money spent on a project.
- Group information together. Make sure your recordable injuries posting is near other safety related information on your scoreboards. This way your information will flow elegantly to your facility.
- The first picture is an attempt to provide information in a controlled way, and while it has segmentation through borders, it falls on itโs face compared to the board on its right. You can tell safety info is green. Maintenance information is red. Itโs easy to know what section of the board belongs to quality vs. lean.
- One of the greatest moments as a child is to open a box of crayons. And if you are lucky enough to be out in California, there is a pretty impressive water show that uses color to great effect. Color makes something appealing, but what most people donโt realize is color provides meaning.
- Using colored areas can show quickly when things are going well, or when changes must be made. Its all about information at a glance. We live in a Twitter/Facebook world. We want information now and we donโt want to have to wait. Using color to help differentiate between good numbers and bad numbers makes the information stand out quickly. Exactly what we need in todayโs high paced workplace.
- Donโt set up for a rousing musical or a Shakespearian play. What I mean by props is to use unique items to help convey a message.
- Using different items in creative ways to provide a message is a great way to get your message across to your coworkers. Itโs a great way to share information and engage people to read it.
- Remember, just posting an overall score can cause confusion and a lack of focus. When you break it down based on teams in your facility, itโs very easy to determine where you are at and what you need to do to improve.
- When something is wrong it shouldnโt take a lot of work to see that there is a problem or issue. Using color boards to mount information to is a great way to show at a glance if things are good, or if something needs to be addressed.
- Have you ever been to a game where the scoreboard is out of sync with what is going on in the game? I donโt mean, itโs lagging behind 30 seconds to add a goal to a score. I mean showing that the score is 8-3 when its really 1-0 or worse yet, the scoreboard still displaying the score from the night before instead of the current game?
- Yeah, me either. So then why have I been in facilities and seen scoreboards, with completely out of date information? When boards are left up with wrong or outdated information, the board loses credibility and could be rendered useless and wasteful. If the information is important that you are collecting, make sure itโs kept up to date!
- Unique is key! A well designed board can make a difference in the facility. But a unique scoreboard, will fire on all cylinders.
- When you make a board fun, unique and different your workforce will notice it, interact with it and check it on a regular basis. These two are golf themed, but have great relevance to what the company is doing. The first magnetic clubhouse defines where the assembly cell should be โAt The Turnโ. On first shift this would be 10am. The second clubhouse represents the end of the shift and total balls (cells) needed. Quantity of balls (cells) required per each shift are not static (cycle time complexities changes build rateThis is a weekly score card (one side for each shift). Daily/Shift Par changes because of the complexity of cells.Score reflects performance to Par.Red is under par (exceeded build rate)Green is over par (missed build rate)Score is recorded by relationship to Par (-8 in โRedโ represents the cell exceeded cell build rate by 8 cellsโฆโฆ.)
- Make sure you utilize the information you are collecting. Use it to improve your business. Donโt just track how many parts you are making, track the total, reasons for downtime, and proposed solutions to fix the problems you are incurring.
- Collecting data is fine and all, but putting it to use is key! If you can make improvements to your facility based on the information collected from your scoreboards, ahead in the game!
