A Gyrocopter, Gyroplane, or Gyro for short, can be considered a cross between a helicopter and a fixed wing airplane. A Gyro uses rotor blades like a helicopter, but uses a propeller for power, as does a fixed wing airplane.
The rotor blades on top of a Gyro are mounted on a free spinning bearing and teetering system. These blades get their lifting power from the air moving up through them. As they move through the air they spin like a windmill. This spinning produces lift.
The forward motion of the Gyro provides the air moving up through the rotor, and a propeller provides the forward motion. As with a fixed wing airplane, in the absence of engine power, gravity must provide this forward motion.
To differentiate a helicopter from a gyro is simple. In a helicopter the rotor blades are powered. This power to the rotor blades creates an equal and opposite torque on the helicopter fuselage. A tail rotor is required to counteract this torque. A Gyro does not create this torque and therefore does not need a tail rotor

The concept of living next to one’s hobby is not new. Houses on
golf courses have been available in the USA for years, and the
concept is now being introduced in the UK.
Conversely, marina homes have become popular in coastal areas of the UK, where owners
can board their boat outside their home without first having to drive to a marina. In the USA,
and to a lesser extent in France, homes on non-commercial airfields have become popular
amongst the aviation community for the same reasons as with golf and boats. However, there
are no airfield homes yet in the UK, which is a concept that Hangar Homes has been set up
to address.
For many General Aviation (GA) airfields, it is a struggle for the airfield owner to make the
airfield viable for aviation. One way of achieving this is to attract a number of based aircraft
by having a number of Hangar Homes on the airfield.2 HANGAR HOMES
3. FOR THE OWNER OF THE AIRFIELD
the additional aircraft brings in valuable landing fees, and also helps to
make businesses viable on the airfield, such as for fuel, maintenance
and avionics, which in turn brings in rental income for the airfield owner.
Also, having Hangar Homes on the airfield brings a certain amount of
kudos to the airfield and will bring in visiting aircraft, with additional
landing fees.
FOR THE OWNER OF A HANGAR HOME
not only does it save them the cost of parking their aircraft and

8. What is a Hangar
Home made of?
Most hangars are made of steel to cope with the long spans required. Whilst steel hangars can be
insulated on the inside and clad on the outside, steel is still costly and not particularly eco-friendly
and the result still looks more like a hangar than a home. The Hangar Home is designed to look
more like a home than a hangar, and uses Cross-Laminated Timber panels to make up the walls,
upper floor, roof and balconies, with only a couple of steel stanchions and beams to support the
main balcony and hangar entrance.
Because the panels are manufactured off-site with all the doors and windows already cut out,
the building can be put up in only a few days on a steel-reinforced concrete slab, minimising
disruption on the airfield, and then fitted out with underfloor heating, electrics, roof tiles, kitchen
and bathrooms in a few weeks, making the overall build time a fraction of a conventional home.
Insulation is added to the outside walls and covered with timber cladding, and with its overhanging
eaves and balconies, the Hangar Home looks more like a Swiss chalet than a regular house.8 HANGAR HOMES
9. How Eco-friendly is
a Hangar Home?
The short answer is very eco-friendly. Not only because wood is a natural
product, and therefore Carbon neutral, but because the Hangar Home has
been designed to be as energy efficient as possible thereby reducing its
utility bills to a minimum. The following eco-friendly features are standard:
• 100mm insulation on all the wall and roof panels
• Underfloor heating throughout with thermostats in each room
• Rainwater capture for toilets
• Air source heat pump for heating and cooling
• Triple-glazing for heat/cold retention and sound-proofing

10. How much does a
Hangar Home cost?
This would largely depend upon the cost of the land, which would vary depending on where the airfield is situated.
The cost of the building would be some 30% less than a conventional new 2000 square foot two storey detached house
with integral double garage in the area, but would have a huge 1200 square foot heated hangar, which, with or without a
plane, would make the ultimate ‘Man-Cave’ or workshop, and the ideal place to build a kit aircraft or helicopter.
The aim is to provide a Hangar Home at the same price as a 3-bed semi-detached house in the area, but with much more
room, character and value for money, and minimal running costs. Whilst Hangar Homes are designed to be built on
non-commercial GA airfields as multiple units, they could be built singularly on private airstrips, without the land cost,
as a primary residence or guest quarters. Because Hangar Homes are built using traditional materials, there is no reason
why owners could not get a conventional mortgage on them as a primary residence or holiday home.

11. Why buy a
Hangar Home?
Living on an airfield is not to everyone’s taste, but to some who are into aviation or have their own light aircraft;
it’s a great place to live. Waking up on a sunny weekend morning, having breakfast on the balcony overlooking the
airfield and then going flying, is for some as good as it gets.
We’re not talking about a busy commercial airport with noisy jets flying in and out all day and night, but small GA
airfields with flying during daylight hours. The sort of airfield where aviation enthusiasts would want to sit outside
watching the little planes come and go, and where the evening brings an eerie silence and serene beauty.
Living in a Hangar Home is almost unique, as there would only be space for a certain number of them with both
airside and roadside access. Therefore, a Hangar Home could be a good investment as there would be a limited
supply on any given airfield with a much greater demand from other buyers, depending on the location.

‘community’
Unlike the USA and France, there are no residential ‘Air Parks’ in the UK as all GA airfields are mixed-use for leisure
and business aviation, training, maintenance, hangarage and parking. Hangar Homes have been specifically
designed for use on such airfields in the UK and Europe with a small ‘footprint’ taking up less space on the airfield
than hangar homes elsewhere.
However, owners of Hangar Homes will inevitably create a ‘community’ as pilots tend to gather with other pilots,
just as boating people or golfers congregate. Where there are a sufficient number of Hangar Homes on an airfield,
a clubhouse with a gym, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, restaurant and bar, looking like the other Hangar Homes but twice the
size, may be built for use by the residents and visiting pilots.
