Palomar College offers over 250 degree and certificate programs across many fields including Media Studies. The Media Studies department specifically offers exciting programs in Radio, Television, Photography, Cinema, and Journalism that provide hands-on learning experiences. Students can earn A.A. degrees or Certificates of Achievement in these areas to transfer to four-year programs or enter the job market. The Journalism program emphasizes skills in news writing, reporting, editing, photojournalism and design through its student newspaper and magazine. If you are a high school student who is passionate about film, photography, writing,
social media or music, you should consider making Palomar College’s Media Studies
program your next educational stop.
Our 2-year program offers degrees and certificates in cinema, photography,
communications, journalism, digital broadcasting, public relations and social media.
For a fourth of the cost of a four-year school, you will get the chance to work in a
department that routinely beats four-year colleges in regional and state-wide contests.
When you graduate, Media Studies students go onto four-year schools as well as directly
to opportunities in Hollywood, internships at radio stations, or jobs working for major

certificates in print journalism. Students can pursue coursework in
news writing, reporting, editing, photojournalism and
computerized page layout and design.
• This program doesn’t waste time just lecturing at students. This is a
hands-on program. Palomar faculty shows students how to do
the work and then makes students try it. You will leave this
program with the skills to immediately get a job in journalism.
• Journalism students gain hands-on experience by joining the staff
of Palomar’s student newspaper, The Telescope:

Journalism Program Advantages
Palomar’s journalism faculty includes experienced professionals with specialized academic training.
Journalism students learn reporting, writing, photography, design and multimedia skills.
The journalism facility includes a multiple-workstation Macintosh computer lab in a brand new
building. Students complete their assignments using state-of-the-art software including Adobe
InDesign, Photoshop, WordPress, Final Cut Pro, and Microsoft Office. Students earn transferable
college credit for their journalism coursework. We also host an annual Media Days where we bring
in professionals from the field to tell you more about it. Here is one of the panels, on investigative

Career Opportunities
Palomar’s Journalism Department prides itself in providing networking opportunities for its students. We routinely have guest
speakers in our classes and host a Media Days each Spring that brings in top media from around the county to talk about
journalism. These events not only show Palomar students what the pros are doing but provide networking opportunities that
often lead to internships. If a student doesn’t snag a job at those events, then Palomar Journalism professors help them find an
internship through our impressive list of contacts. It is our belief that an internship is an integral part of the training in journalism.
We also have an impressive alumni network that helps Palomar graduates find a job in journalism.
Employment Outlook
Palomar’s journalism students are well positioned to take advantage of the shift to Web-based publishing. Industry officials
have told us that they would rather hire one of our Journalism graduates — with their reporting, writing and multimedia skills —
than a journalist who has 10-year experience but has never written a blog or uploaded a video. Although traditional media
such as newspapers are shrinking, there will ALWAYS be a need for content on the Internet and there will ALWAYS be jobs for
people who are able to produce high-quality content. Palomar College’s Journalism department can teach you how to do
just that. Palomar College can get you up to speed in this digital world.

10. Photography Program
The Photography Program at Palomar College offers students the opportunity to study photography from beginning
to advanced levels in a variety of areas, including fine art, editorial, and commercial photography. The program
stresses development of creativity while offering a firm grounding in basic skills, technical knowledge, and
applications. Students can earn an Associate in Arts Degree or a Certificate of Achievement in Photography.
Additionally, the courses will satisfy lower division requirements for transfer to four-year institutions or photographic
specialty institutions.
Palomar's photography instructors are experienced professionals in their field. The instructional facility includes two
black and white darkrooms, a color lab, and studio, as well as work areas for film processing and print finishing. The
department is committed to maintaining excellence in the quality of instruction and contemporary standards in
creative approaches.
The Palomar College photography department prepares students for employment in a wide range of field-related
careers from professional photography to photographic lab services, or prepares students to pursue individual free
lance artistic careers.
EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
The photographic and imaging industry continues to be one of the largest industries worldwide. It will grow even more
considering new developments in electronic digital imaging, and there will be many opportunities for employment for
the skilled photographer and the visually literate.
