Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana is a national program launched in India in 2014 to provide universal access to banking facilities. The scheme aims to provide all Indian households with a bank account, debit card, accident insurance and other financial services. On the launch date over 15 million bank accounts were opened. Account holders receive a zero-balance bank account, RuPay debit card, Rs. 1 lakh accident insurance and life insurance of Rs. 30,000 for accounts opened by January 26, 2015. After six months, account holders can avail an overdraft of Rs. 5,000 from the bank.
