Editor's Notes
We all learn in different ways and at different speeds, and not always the first time. No one has a better learning style than anyone else. Everybody has things that they are good at naturally and other things that have to be done over and over to get right.
Sometimes during the process, we stub our toe, burn our finger, get bumps, bruises and have misunderstanding before we get things right.
This is my learning survey graph, and according to VARK, I am a mixed learner.
Depending on what I am learning, I apply different styles to get the best outcomes.
However, the first approach for me to learn things is through listening, reading and writing.
So this make me a multimodal learner.
Sometimes, I learn by seeing,
Sometimes by hearing and
Other time, I learn through actually doing things.
As a visual learner, I like to take notes, write key words, or make lists when I hear things
I write clearly and well spaced for easy reading
I copy what’s on the board
I use highlighter's to distinguish keywords when reading
I like to think in pictures by creating vivid mental images to help retain information.
Sometimes I watch videos or other people before trying to do things myself.
Beside visual, listening is also an important aspect. I relate most effectively to the spoken word, especially when I am in school.
I engage more when attending class because I like to ask questions and get explanations from the professor when needed.
I also benefit from group study because discussion and debate help me to retain information faster.
Last but not least, I found recording lectures to be very helpful because it allowed me to review the material as often as I want
Sometimes Kinesthetic style is another way that I find best fit for certain things. This is applied a lot especially in a daily basis
For example, to make a cake, after reading an instruction, gathering the ingredients, we have to actually put all the ingredient together by melting butter, beating eggs mixed all the ingredients and bake it. The cake might not come out best in the first time, but after 2-3 times making it. The better it get.
Or in this computer class, it requires all 3 styles of learning, but I think the best way is kinesthetically by actually using the software to create the many different types of documents. The more practice, the better we know how to operate the software and familiar to it.
This video I found funny because I have many of the same problems learning English. To be better at grammar, I listen to people speak, so that I know how to apply words and grammar into the right context.
For spelling, I write the word down over and over until I get it into my mind
With pronunciation, best way is to practice saying it over and over. I practice by making conversation, when people hear me and correct me as I didn’t pronounce right.
Poor vocabulary, I read, and if I hear a word that I don’t know I ask
As I have shown throughout my presentation, it depends on what I am learning, different styles benefit me in how I perceive the information.
“Try a lot of stuff, keep what works!”
