    • The African Elephant is the largest livingland animal. It is larger than the AsianElephant. These mammals have very strongsocial bonds and live in family groups headedby a female called a cow. The males calledbulls. Elephants are excellent swimmers.Elephants have few natural enemies exceptman, and they are in danger of extinction dueto loss of habitat and poaching. They arekilled for their ivory tusks.
    • African elephants are about 10 feet tall atthe shoulder and their weight roughly 6 tons.Males are larger than females. Both males andfemales have tusks. They have wrinkled,gray-brown skin that is almost hairless. African elephants have large ears up to 5feet. Elephants breathe through two nostrils atthe end of their trunk. The trunk is also used toget water and food. Elephants eat roots,grasses, leaves, fruit, and bark.
