3. CCTV Installation in the Real World
CCTV installations are recommended by Police services and insurance brokers as security cameras can either deter criminal activities, or lead
to the culprits being caught more easily. Most crimes are committed by opportunists, that could be deterred by the positioning of CCTV
cameras in, or next to the properties they were considering breaking into. Of course the more hardened criminals will not be put off by just
the sight of camera and monitoring systems, but they may decide to take precautions to avoid being identified, or move on to another
premise without adequate security features.
Over recent years it would seem that CCTV cameras have spread right across the globe. These cameras have become fitted to an ever
increasing number of domestic residences and commercially used premises alike, as both individuals, and also firms aim to improve their
security. Some places have installed CCTV off their own backs to raise the level of security around them. On the other hand security
cameras and matching monitoring equipment have been installed upon the recommendation of insurance companies, or the advice of the
local Police service.
To a very large extent it is always good sense for commercial, manufacturing, and retail companies to have CCTV fitted at all the sites that
they use, irrespective of whether the premises are owned or rented out to them. It also makes sense for domestic homes to have security
cameras if there valuable contents inside, or just outside if talking about cars, or if the property lies within an area that has a proportionally
higher crime rates. People, or companies that have already been burgled when CCTV was not fitted, have even stronger motives to have
systems installed, to catch any future burglars, and to make sure their properties will still be insured.
Now some smaller firms, as well as householders may appreciate the benefits of extra security they would hopefully gain from the fitting of a
CCTV system but are not entirely sure about the process of having them installed.
The following is a guide on how to fit CCTV cameras and also
monitoring devices:
Sometimes CCTV installations are not as good as they should be, mainly due to inadequate planning beforehand. Careful consideration should
always be given to the exact location of all the cameras used within any CCTV system. Generally the larger the premises being covered the
more cameras need to be installed, and usually these are positioned to be seen, but in such a way that it is very difficult to disable, or
tamper with them. After all a system or network of cameras that are in too accessible a position are no good as burglars, or intruders can
stop them working, and therefore nullify your security measures with immediate effect.Generated with www.html-to-pdf.net Page 3 / 5

more cameras need to be installed, and usually these are positioned to be seen, but in such a way that it is very difficult to disable, or
tamper with them. After all a system or network of cameras that are in too accessible a position are no good as burglars, or intruders can
stop them working, and therefore nullify your security measures with immediate effect.
Even if tamper proof the CCTV could be ineffective if the camera positioning does not take distances, glare, lighting, reflections, and the
times of the day into account. If the camera is too far away from possible entry points into the building either fit it closer to entrances, or
install with a lens that can focus images over a greater distance. As most systems operate 24 / 7 it is best to have infra red devices
attached to the cameras so images can still be recorded when the the sunlight is too bright, or at night when it would be too dark to pick
anything out if trying to identify, or at the very least locate intruders.
Avoid putting cameras directly in front of bright lights, for instance if too close to security lights, or street lamps the extra light will obscure
your view, and recorded images will not be clear if needed by the Police, or as evidence in court cases. Infrared cameras at all cost should
be placed in a position where they are actually directly opposite each other, as they will ruin their respective images.
Often wiring is a consideration that is overlooked. Camera positions are worked adequately, the best lens and infrared are chosen, but then
there is not enough wiring to complete the circuit. It is good practice to have a little extra wire near every camera in case they have to be
relocated at a later date. Then you have to plan to make sure that there are enough connectors, and the right types of connectors to link
all the cameras, monitors, and recording devices together.
Mounting the Cameras, CCTV Installers
Now the cameras are at the heart of every CCTV system. Most systems will only supply you with the bulk standard wall brackets, so you
may need to buy some more mounts if you need to angle them differently from the standard settings. Prior to mounting each camera ensure
that all cables can be connected safely and keep the equipment running in all weather conditions.
Getting CCTV Systems Connected And Staying That Way
Now cabling and connectors can be a tricky thing to get right, but if you do not get it right then your system will not work. Whenever you
are connecting power cables, or battery terminals to the system ensure that the correct polarity is stuck to, to avoid short circuiting
cameras, monitors, or recorders, or blowing them up completely. Make sure you know what kind of connectors you need, often it has to be a
precise match or things will simply not work.
If you know what you are doing you can change the wiring, the cable ends, or the connectors to suit your CCTV system better. People
often alter the connector jacket to enhance the wiring and connectivity of the whole system. Only alter the wiring or the connectors if you
are absolutely sure you know what you are doing, otherwise pay an electrician or CCTV fitter to do it for you.
If possible it is always best to fit any CCTV system with a back up power supply, in case of power cuts. If power is lost then the whole
system is useless in the event of a burglary, or intruders being on the premises. Make sure that the backup battery or generator can last for
several hours at least. Having backup power is also sensible as some intruders will attempt to bypass CCTV by cutting off the electricity.
