How can you help us?
Why would you help us?
Reading Mencap encourages
corporate partnerships so that
employees feel that they can
make a real difference to the
communities they are part of.
We encourage them to become
involved in the charity’s projects
and campaigns and to feel part
of the organisation. We simply
ask for time and enthusiasm,
making a real impact on both
the charity and the families
receiving support.
For over fifty years Reading Mencap, a local
independent charity, has supported children,
young people, and adults with learning
disabilities and their carers with a range of
professional and highly valued services. They
include clubs, activities, a day service and our
unique Family Support Service.

A young mother is struggling
to come to terms with having
just had a diagnosis for her
child of a learning disability
or autism
A Reading Mencap Family
Adviser visits and supports
her to access the services and
benefits she needs, including
parent groups and networks
where she can meet other
mothers for peer support
Firstly, to make a difference to local people with learning disability and their
families and carers.
There are many other benefits associated with supporting a local charity like
Reading Mencap. Communication and PR with Good News articles will not only
increase an organisation’s profile by adding value through brand association
but boost corporate social responsibility credentials.
An enhanced working environment will also increase staff morale and retention
with employee-volunteering opportunities and team-building activities, offering
the chance of making a real difference to families, children, young people and
adults with learning disability in the local community.
Employees can benefit through increased awareness of the support offered by
Reading Mencap, and the relationship between the charity and the company
will forge closer links throughout the local community.

£500 would pay for activities like yoga
and bowling for our ME Project day service
for 45 adults with learning disabilities for
six months
£1,000 would pay for our popular monthly
discos for 40 people with a learning disability
and their families for a year
£3,000 would enable us to run our mini-
bus for a year
£6,500 would run our home-visiting
service for 50 elderly carers for a year
£10,000 would enable us to run our
helpline for a year
£30,000 would enable us to run our Black
& Minority Ethnic support service for 100
families for a year
£50,000 would pay for our office and
overhead costs for a year
An elderly carer is fright-
ened about the future for
his adult dependant with a
learning disability who still
lives with him
The Reading Mencap home
visitor assesses their need,
discusses options, and offers
a package of support for the
dependent adult, respite for
the carer, and onward referral,
if appropriate. This leaves
them feeling less vulnerable
and less worried about an
uncertain future
You can make a
real difference
