Dorothy Sweet
by Heidi Bada
orothy Sweet enjoys her clubhouse volunteering. Once a
month for roughly four years, she has served as Member-in
-Charge at the clubhouse. She also often attends the Women's
Brunch and Genealogy SIGs. She has also sampled a few classes.
All have been great ways to meet other computer users.
One of the original members of the Seniors SIG, Dorothy saw the
numbers rise from about eight to over 20. She is pleased the
percentage of women attending has increased.
The clubhouse is great forum for Dorothy to meet people. She
enjoys chatting in the lunchroom. She says having a comfortable
clubhouse is important. She explained, "If people don't feel at
home, they won't ask questions."
Dorothy insists her computer expertise is limited. When computer problems are addressed,
Dorothy assures us someone always offers to help. When necessary, while MIC, she's found
it's easy to "shout" for help and clubhouse attendees respond favorably.
Despite her self-professed limited knowledge, Dorothy spots talent in new members. She
explains her teaching career helps her recognize people that are skilled with managing visitors'
questions. Whenever she spots new members that have a knack for helping people, she
suggests they volunteer as an MIC.
She also enjoyed the classes she attended, adding, "The spirit of the club is very good."
Throughout her activities at the club, she says she has "met a whole lot of nice friends." Often,
people show up regularly for different activities. Recently the women's brunch participants
even threw a little party at one member's house.
The key reason she keeps a computer is for e-mail. She keeps in touch with family and friends
in England. She also visits England yearly. Of course, she attends some of the club's
Genealogy SIGs too.
She joined the club in the late 80s. In those days, few women attended meetings and
clubhouse events. She recalls joining because fellow genealogists were already members.
Dorothy recalls using mainframes during graduate history studies at the University of Victoria.
Unfortunately, she "never got on very well , and repeated such classes.
Luckily, for Dorothy, the club's members are a diverse group. She shows us how Volunteering
leads to meeting a variety of people in our club.
