This workshop will introduce some of the main principles and techniques of Social Network Analysis (SNA). We will use examples from organizational and social media-based networks to understand concepts such as network density, diameter, centrality measures, community detection algorithms, etc. The session will also introduce Gephi, a popular program for SNA. Gephi is a free and open-source tool that is available for both Mac and PC computers. By the end of the session, you will develop a general understanding of what SNA is, what research questions it can help you answer, and how it can be applied to your own research. You will also learn how to use Gephi to visualize and examine networks using various layout and community detection algorithms. Instructor’s Bio: Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd is a Canada Research Chair in Social Media Data Stewardship, Associate Professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, and Director of Research at the Social Media Lab. Anatoliy is also a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists; a co-editor of a multidisciplinary journal on Big Data and Society; and a founding co-chair of the International Conference on Social Media and Society. His research initiatives explore how social media platforms are changing the ways in which people and organizations communicate, collaborate and disseminate information and how these changes impact the norms and structures of modern society.

What is your talk about? This seminar will illustrate various social network analysis (SNA) techniques and measures and their applications to research problems in education. These applications will be illustrated from our own research utilising a range of SNA techniques. What are the key messages of your talk? We will cover some of the ways in which network data can be collected and utilised with other research data to examine the relationships between network measures and other attributes of individuals and organisations, and how it can be linked to other approaches in multiple methods studies. What are the implications for practice or research from your talk? SNA is an approach that draws from theories of social capital to study the relational ties that exist between actors or institutions in a specific context. Such ties might include learning exchanges or advice-seeking interactions. SNA techniques allow researchers to incorporate the interdependence of participants within their research questions, whereas many traditional techniques assume our participants, and their responses to our questions, are independent of one another.

Summary The Cytoscape Cyberinfrastructure (CI) extends the successful Cytoscape development and community model by enabling network biologists to contribute and leverage microservices deployable at scale. The CI solves many of Cytoscape’s limitations while also delivering novel and dynamic functionality to both Cytoscape and standalone workflows, thus further empowering the already vital network biology community. Abstract Cytoscape is an indispensable tool for network data analysis and visualization. One of Cytoscape’s greatest strengths is that it is powered by a vibrant array of developer-contributed apps. However, as network biologists’ requirements evolve, Cytoscape is challenged not only to keep pace, but to lead new and existing developers to create even greater value. Currently, multiscale and multifaceted networks push the memory limits of a Cytoscape workstation, while complex calculations such as Network Based Stratification and Network Based GWAS strain workstation processors. Increasingly, users demand support for collaborative projects, reproducible workflows, and interoperability with external tool chains. Finally, economic pressures favor solutions that promote code and algorithm reusability and evolvability. In response, we have created the Cytoscape Cyberinfrastructure (CI), which is both an Internet-scale distributed system (based on Microservices [1]) and the network biology community it serves. Its mission is to enable and encourage network biologists to create and deploy high quality, innovative and scalable services focusing on network-based computation, collaboration and visualization. Microservices can be written in any language, and are highly testable and evolvable. They can run on servers ranging from a single thread to a large cloud-based cluster. They can easily be reused in reproducible workflows or can serve as components in larger services. The CI links microservices via a light weight REST-based aspect-oriented interchange protocol (called CX), which enables tailored data streams while supporting service innovation via evolvable standards. CI infrastructure services support user authentication, long duration job execution, and a service repository that enables researchers to publish their services or discover services published by others. This model builds on the successful Cytoscape app community, which is based on similar mechanisms though at the scale of individual workstations. Prominent examples of microservices include NDEx [2] (a repository for biological networks), NodeWalker (which uses heat dispersion to identify the most relevant subnetworks containing a given set of genes), cyNetShare [3] (which visualizes a network in a browser) and Cytoscape itself (which can also call CI services). Interfaces are available for Python, IPython, R and Matlab. Future work includes adding clustering, analysis, layout, publishing and display microservices and interfaces to Galaxy and Taverna workflows.

Validating experimental results from articles has finally become a norm at many systems and ML conferences. Nowadays, more than half of accepted papers pass artifact evaluation and share related code and data. Unfortunately, lack of a common experimental framework, common research methodology and common formats places an increasing burden on evaluators to validate a growing number of ad-hoc artifacts. Furthermore, having too many ad-hoc artifacts and Docker snapshots is almost as bad as not having any (!), since they cannot be easily reused, customized and built upon. While overviewing more than 100 papers during artifact evaluation at PPoPP, CGO, PACT, Supercomputing and other conferences, we noticed that many of them use similar experimental setups, benchmarks, models, data sets, environments and platforms. This motivated us to develop Collective Knowledge (CK), an open workflow framework with a unified Python API to automate common researchers’ tasks such as detecting software and hardware dependencies, installing missing packages, downloading data sets and models, compiling and running programs, performing autotuning and co-design, crowdsourcing time-consuming experiments across computing resources provided by volunteers similar to SETI@home, applying statistical analysis and machine learning, validating results and plotting them on a common scoreboard for open and fair comparison, automatically generating interactive articles, and so on: http://cKnowledge.org. In this presentation we will introduce CK concepts and present several real world use cases from General Motors and Arm on collaborative benchmarking, autotuning and co-design of efficient software/hardware stacks for deep learning. The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo.
