Basic EGR principle NO2 formation depends on peak combustion temperatures and N2/O2 concentrations in the combustion air Exhaust gas loop Effects by EGR  CO2 replaces O2 in the scavenge air.  CO2 has a higher heat capacity thus reducing the compression temperatures.  Reduced O2 content in the scavenge air reduces the peak temperatures.
