BPG /Bluestone Planning Group is a Cambridge-
based urban design and planning firm specializing
in the design of cities, towns and places in
collaboration with communities, governments,
institutions, and private land holders. Services
include urban design, master planning, town
center planning, transportation corridor planning,
water-front planning, land development planning,
and campus planning for clients requiring
principal-intensive consultation. Working with a
broad range of public sector, private sector, and institutional clients throughout New
England, the US, and abroad, BPG has the proven skills and a highly successfully
track record of seeing its clients' plans come to reality. This is accomplished by
strategically integrating implementation and funding techniques from the outset with
planning proposals and its clients' strategic goals to create added value. The key to
any of the Bluestone Planning Group's successes is therefore a powerful
combination of providing the vision as well as the implementing strategy to bring
those visions to achievement. The firm’s success is evidenced by its many repeat
clients – several of whom have collaborated with BPG for over twenty years.
The firm can offer consultation and expertise on a wide variety of assignments - from
managing an entire consulting team on the client's behalf, to preparing site eval-
uations, feasibility studies, designs, plans and implementation strategies. When
required to accomplish complex assignments, the firm's capacity is supplemented
by teaming with the best expertise available, including development specialists,
transportation planners, environmental scientists, engineers, and zoning experts.
Bringing over thirty years of successful design, planning and management exper-
ience to any new project, Lawrence Bluestone, as Principal of the Bluestone
Planning Group, has designed, managed, and implemented major projects ranging
from comprehensive master plans and cultural tourism attractions to town center
plans, downtown and waterfront plans, campus plans, office and industrial park
plans, “brownfield” site redevelopments, transit oriented plans, and transportation
corridor projects. His present and past clients have included corporations,
developers, and institutions such as the New England Aquarium, the Mass
Horticultural Society, the Polaroid Corporation, Olin Corporation, MIT, Gerald Hines
Developers, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. His public agency clients
have included US HUD, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority,
MassDevelopment, Mass Turnpike Authority, Massachusetts Port Authority, Boston
Redevelopment Authority, and a variety of state, municipal agencies throughout the
eastern half of the country. His work has been published in Architectural Record,
Progressive Architecture, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design
International magazine.
Beyond this professional expertise, BPG brings a broader civic commitment to all its
efforts. As an active civic leader in urban affairs, and President and Board member
of civic organizations such as Move Massachusetts 2000, Lawrence Bluestone and
BPG are personally and professionally dedicated to community building and place-
making as well as the health, preservation, vibrancy and design quality of our cities,
towns, suburbs and built environment. That enthusiasm for our built environment is

BPG / Bluestone Planning Group Urban Design / Planning / Architecture FIRM PROFILE BPG /Bluestone Planning Group is a Cambridge- based urban design and planning firm specializing in the design of cities, towns and places in collaboration with communities, governments, institutions, and private land holders. Services include urban design, master planning, town center planning, transportation corridor planning, water-front planning, land development planning, and campus planning for clients requiring principal-intensive consultation. Bringing over thirty years of successful design, planning and management exper- ience to any new project, Lawrence Bluestone, as Principal of the Bluestone Planning Group, has designed, managed, and implemented major projects ranging from comprehensive master plans and cultural tourism attractions to town center plans, downtown and waterfront plans, campus plans, office and industrial park plans, “brownfield” site redevelopments, transit oriented plans, and transportation corridor projects. His present and past clients have included corporations, developers, and institutions such as the New England Aquarium, the Mass Horticultural Society, the Polaroid Corporation, Olin Corporation, MIT, Gerald Hines Developers, and the Massachusetts General Hospital.
