Editor's Notes
It is believed that a human in rural Cameroon was either bitten by a chimp or was cut while butchering a chimp and became infected with the disease. That person then passed it on to someone else and so on passing it along the Sanaga River, a commercial waterway and then eventually made its way to the Congo and the first known human being with HIV. There is no data available to figure out how many people were infected between the first human in Cameroon and the first patient identified with the disease in the Congo. It wasn’t until the mid 1970’s that AIDS hit the U.S.
In 2000, immigration officials in the U.S. and Canada realized illegal Chinese immigrants were sneaking into Canada usually to find an easier route into the U.S. Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks caused both countries to step up efforts to prevent illegal immigration. There are some people who want to open the borders to immigrants to come into the U.S. and that is because they argue that these immigrants do the menial jobs, like jobs in agriculture or constuction-jobs that most Americans don’t want.Opponents argue that we must know who is entering our country in order to avoid future terrorist attacks. Then there are those who want to compromise and grant citizenship to persons already in the country, then have persons seeking citizenship follow new stricter rules. In 2000, the number of international migrants reached 191 million, compared to 75 million in 1960. Most migrate to the U.S. with 38 million and the next country with the highest migration rate is Russia with 12 million so the U.S. definitely has a problem here.
