John Costa is CEO of RePubIT, an Interactive eBook Prototyping Studio and chairs three open-standards committees, including the IEEE IC12 Industry Connections Committee ADB (IEEE Actionable Data Book & ePub3) effort. The group is developing an open architecture for standardizing interactive eBooks, active widgets and xAPI. Current xAPI development involves integration of the ePub3 to dashboards of various learning record stores including real-time updates back to the epub itself. We are actively seeking new members. xAPI Camp-Orlando was a one-day event showcasing what’s possible with xAPI. Coinciding with Learning Solutions 2015, on March, 24 2015, we gathered 100+ technology leaders at the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Simulation & Training. This was a day filled with case studies, problem solving and networking. We connected participants to answers they could act on and a community that helps them make an impact.
We were at the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Simulation & Training, located at 3100 Technology Parkway, Orlando, FL 32826.

3. About the IEEE LTSC
Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC)
Formal accredited standards since 1996
– Best known for LOM, SCORM runtime
Participation free, open, by indivdual
Strategy shift to support interoperability lifecycle
– Ability to form Technical Advisory Group issuing reports
– Ability to sponsor pre-competitive R&D on interoperability
(Actionable Data Book project)
4. ADB 2015 Goals
Publish report on ADB technical architecture
Develop use cases to illustrate ADB generality
Develop 2nd generation ADB proof of concept
A survey to assess ADB viability as a globally
available platform for mobile learning
Host ADB workshop at an appropriate venue

6. Vision of the ADBook Project
Publishers and training organizations are now adapting
textbooks and other content for delivery on mobile devices.
– Books are enhanced with media and interactive activities, but otherwise
static digital versions of their paper brethren
But suppose that a “book” could:
– Access mentors and teachers to assist on-demand (wifi)
– Situational response to learners location (GPS, Beacons, RFID)
– Recognize confusion, frustration, boredom… and adapt (camera / mic)
– Understand and answer learner’s questions (mic)
– Continually assess and remediate (xAPI, widgets, data connectivity)
– Interface with local systems, devices, and people (bluetooth)
Imagine social and network aware ePubs – It’s happening!
7. ADB xAPI Model:
Motivate by considering xAPI capabilities as
appropriate in different content contexts
The xAPI Statement API
– Can be used for learner experience/performance data
– Can be used for annotations
– Can be used for scientific data
The xAPI Agent Profile API
– Can be used to get/store user preferences
The xAPI State API
– Can be used to get/store activity data
