Font & Magazine Title Research
1. Introduction
The genre I have decided to choose for my magazine is R&B this is because I am a fan of the genre in general and I also read some of the
R&B/Hip-hop magazines already out there such as Billboard and Complex magazine and I feel as though I know what makes a good R&B
magazine, I also think it’s a good decision as its an ever growing genre that is already one of the most popular genres which justifies
having magazines based on it.
I have been thinking about names for magazine, I want something short, memorable and unique. So far the names I am currently
contemplating are “Island” and also “Tide”. I feel as though these names are memorable and unique, next I plan on trying these names
out with different fonts which am going to start researching to help decide what suits my style of magazine and what title I think looks the
best. I plan on trying a handful of fonts that I feel as though are real potential candidates for my masthead font.
2. R&B magazine Font Research
This font catches peoples attention
and is easy to see and read due to
its boldness however I don’t
particularly like how bold the font is
and feel as though the font would
be too formal for my magazine.
One thing I have noticed is that a lot
of magazines use the colour red as
their house colour as it seems to
contrast well with lots of colours and
no matter what's around it colour
wise it always seems to stand out.
This magazine has a more casual
approach to its cover due to its bright
colours used for headlines and sub
headlines and also in particular the
masthead is what I like the most, its
bright colours and 3d shading effects
give the masthead a casual feel and
makes it stand out due to its rather
colourless background.
Overall I like this masthead font a lot,
its unusual and unique, its very rare
magazines use 3D shading/ multiple
colours in the masthead which is
what makes this style refreshing and
also makes it stand out.
3. More R&B magazine Masthead research
Here are a handful of other R&B magazines with mastheads that I liked and thought worked well. most are pretty
simplistic and have pale colours to make them standout. The fonts that I think work best are the Jet Magazine
Masthead and also the XXL magazine masthead/logo I like both the styles of these fonts, the jet magazine font is
unique and almost futuristic and I also like how the XXL masthead blurs the lines of being a ,logo and a masthead at the
same time.

6. Magazine Name & masthead font decision
• The name I have decided to pick based on my research and experimentation is ISLAND, I think
this name is short & snappy and also is memorable and unique, it also relates to my laid back
approach and style that I want my magazine to have.
• And for he font of my masthead I have decided to the Hobo STD font, I have chosen this font
because I feel as though this font matched my criteria the best as it was unique, matched the
style I want my magazine to have while also being bold and standing out.
Hobo STD = ISLAND Magazine
