India skills upgrading safety in dmrc
1. IndiaSkills- Upgrading Safety Standards in Delhi Metro
DMRC chose to partner with IndiaSkills to improve the skill sets of their employees and upgrade the
Metro’s safety norms to internationally accepted standards. The training program was aimed at imparting
awareness, training and practical exposure to international standards of safety measures followed in
metro construction sites to the DMRC workers. IndiaSkills designed the course to meet the specific skilling
needs of DMRC employees and developed it on the vast knowledge & expertise of City & Guilds in the
Construction Health & Safety sector. The 42 hour (1 week) program equips learners in metro transport
maintenance with the knowledge and practical skills in implementing & maintaining safety standards and
regulations for the workplace. The qualification comprehensively covers essential subjects such as use of
protective equipment, administering first aid, safe work procedures, fire safety measures as well as health
& safety, legislation and risk assessment.
CONTENT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
A unique feature of the training program is that the course delivery and assessment is done through the
local language (Hindi). This enables the instructors to teach the course and the learner to write their
exams in Hindi even though the course and medium of instruction is English. The procedure was
developed based on a thorough research on effective instruction medium in India and is aimed at
facilitating better understanding and learning depth of the course.
The post survey threw up significant achievements. The overall employer satisfaction was at 94% and the
employee confidence level at workplace post training was at 97%. Hari Menon, CEO, IndiaSkills says,
“This training and delivery has been backed by the powerful presence of City & Guilds’ expertise in the
Construction Health & Safety space across the globe over many decades and IndiaSkills’ capability of
customizing & localizing the international qualifications to Indian environment. We are very happy &
proud that the feedback from the 600+ learners has been extremely encouraging and positive.”
