The Hungarian Meteorological Service needed to replace its aging computing infrastructure to improve weather forecasting capabilities. It implemented a solution from IBM including an IBM System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 cluster, two IBM Power 520 Express servers, IBM System Storage DS3400 disk storage, and IBM System Storage TS1040 tape drives for backup and archive. This new infrastructure provides the advanced processing power and storage needed to generate more accurate and timely weather predictions.

Hungarian Meteorological Service improves IT forecast with IBM solutions
1. QuickView Case Study
IBM Systems and Technology Government
The Hungarian Meteorological Service was founded in 1870 and is the
government office responsible for providing weather forecasts to the
public in Hungary. From its headquarters in Budapest, the Hungarian
Meteorological Service publishes weather forecasts and warnings
through local media and through its public website.
Challenge
To provide the most accurate and timely forecasts possible, the
Hungarian Meteorological Service requires advanced computing
capabilities. To continue fulfilling its mission to the public, the
organization needed to replace its existing legacy HP equipment with a
more robust infrastructure solution that could boost processing power
and storage capacity.
Solution
Working with IBM Business Partner KFKI System Integration Ltd.,
the Hungarian Meteorological Service opted for an IBM solution that
addressed the organization’s demanding requirements for both
processing and storage. To handle intensive meteorological calculations,
the organization implemented a 140-node IBM System x iDataPlex
dx360 M2 solution running Red Hat Linux, and two IBM Power 520
Express servers running IBM AIX and virtualized with IBM PowerVM
Express Edition technology.
On the storage side, the Hungarian Meteorological Service
implemented an IBM System Storage DS3400 disk storage system to
manage the large volume of weather data generated by the forecasting
systems. Eight IBM System Storage TS1040 tape drives are used to
provide data backup and archive.
