Gayatri Horror Genre Conventions
1.
2. - Props often include weapons that motivate the
killer such as a gun, knife etc
-These films often take place both indoors and
outdoors however key locations are in a dark
basement, church, graveyard, forests, and
houses of the victims quite often even in
schools.
-The victims are often seen wearing dark,
ragged clothes and marks to hide their identity
from others.
- Horror/Slasher films include dark lighting as
well as chiaroscuro to mask the facial
expressions of different characters as well as
being set in dark areas during the night to build
tension.
3. -Most films of this genre conform to
the plot synopsis of a killer having
either a psychological problem or
having events in their past give them
the motive to get revenge and a
means of satisfaction to their problem
by killing or hurting someone.
-They are often non linear and include
many flashbacks to stress the
importance of the audience having to
see the story behind his/her killings.
4. -Films of this genre conform to the stereotypes of there
being one killer often male targeting vulnerable, innocent
females.
-The killer is normally a frustrated male, getting annoyed
sexually or emotionally because they haven't been
successful with previous experiences with girls.
-There is a typical 'Final Girl' who we see at the beginning
and survives till the end. She is normally virtuous and
responsible.
-The Freudian idea is portrayed well through the knife
being a phallic symbol which gives the killer satisfaction.
- In a typical movie of this genre we see a range of different
characters depending on the setting of the film. In schools
there is usually a group of jocks- these are the sporty types
who usually get the girls. We also see the cheerleader type
of girls who are pretty and successful. Furthermore there is
also a responsible adult/police or protagonist trying to save
the victims or make peace.
5. -The genre involves alot of incidental background
music to create tension and more importantly a sense
of foreboding, alot of this music is rhythmic,
synchronised eerie music which is a crescendo, it also
oscillates unlike other genres to show mystery.
-Sound effects such as stabbing are created by Foley
artists who stab a watermelon to make it seem like
you are stabbing flesh.
-Common sound effects within this genre are
crashing, screaming, crying, door slamming and
footsteps.
-Moments of screeching are created by off key violin
and piano notes to give a sense of danger.
- Another common sound used is silence, this creates
tension and a sense of foreboding as well as the
silence being developed through dialogue which is
often fast paced and has a worried feel.
6. -Horror/Slasher films involve many low
angles to show dominance of the killer over
the victim.
-Close up shots are used to show the facial
expressions of the killer and his victims
suffering.
-Point ofView shots are used frequently to
show a sense of how the killer sees his
victims so the audience can understand him
better.
- Handheld camera techniques are used to
portray realism and make it seem like
someone is recording the event for
pleasure or to show the dramatic events
taking place.
7. -Editing of this genre is very fast paced to
give the trailers a mysterious and scary
feel and help us understand that there
are several different events taking place,
making it easy to identify the genre.
-Most of these types of films include
fades to black to show time passing and
prepare the audience for a dramatic
event to occur or stop, making us wonder
what will happen next.
-Titling is often seen to be
covered/dripping with blood or scratched
onto a surface to make it look rough and
textured.
