2. The narrative centres around a crime usually a theft or a murder, this is to keep the viewer
captivated, the protagonist usually makes the film, most thrillers consist of one or have a
similar substitute.
The antagonist usually exploits the weaknesses of the protagonist.
The protagonist will be seen threatened or in some form of danger in one or more scenes
before the resolution.
Thrillers are usually made up of a complex narrative structure, with false paths, clues and
resolutions. This may have an effect of leaving a strong enigma by keeping their full
attention by having them trying to solve questions.
The antagonist ensnares the protagonist in an increasingly complex web, until the
protagonist feels isolated and helpless.
The narrative presents ordinary situations in which extraordinary things happen.
Micro elements combine in a build-up of suspense.
Themes of identity are common: mistaken identity, doubling/doppelgangers, amnesia.
Themes of seeing, reflection and mirroring. Manipulation of perspectives, visual McGuffins,
and optical illusions are common.
The audience of a thriller is placed in the ambiguous position of voyeur. Voyeurism can also
be a theme and the objectification of female characters is common especially in earlier
thrillers like Vertigo and Rear Window.
A series of or one important enigma is set up in the opening sequence of the film, which is
further complicated during the first part of the film and only resolved at the very end.
3. The main props used in a thriller are weapons. These
contribute to adding suspense and tension. The use of
weapons can establish to an audience who is the
Antagonist or Protagonist, depending on the
narrative.
Mise-en scene which mirrors the protagonists plight.
It is extremely important in a thriller and needs to be
used appropriately, for example, if the character is
upset put them into depressive surroundings. For
many thrillers the mood is usually quite downbeat
reflecting the fact that the lighting is usually dull and
also are usually set in a dull environment.
4. Our loyalty to the Protagonists in movies can be grown by the use
of sound; character themes, and empathetic sound for example
are two very important sound techniques, they can be crucial
making the audience feel a particular emotion.
Sound tracks are broadly used in the film industry.Thrillers can
use sound tracks to create a tense moment, or tension throughout
a whole scene. This technique is very adjustable to it's demands,
and can be one of the biggest tension-builders in a thriller.
The majority of thrillers have non diegetic music playing in the
background creating a sound bridge adding to the realism of a
film.
Dialogue is the main sound used in thrillers giving an insight into
the characters motives relationships and personality.
Silence and sonic exaggerations are two techniques used to build
up tension.
5. In our film we will use many of the generic
conventions to help build tension; we will be
using low level lighting, similar narrative
structures, music, dialogue and mise-en
scene. We are using every element of film
that we can to create the final product (Pure
cinema).
