After putting ten trucks through its most comprehensive truck-evaluation program to date, MOTOR TREND has named the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado "Truck of the Year." After several days of rigorous testing and hundreds of road miles, for MOTOR TREND’s most rigorous truck-testing program in history, the magazine editors ultimately chose the 2015 Chevy Colorado as the Truck of the Year.
2. After putting ten trucks through its most comprehensive
truck-evaluation program to date, MOTOR TREND has
named the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado "Truck of the Year."
After several days of rigorous testing and hundreds of
road miles, for MOTOR TREND’s most rigorous truck-
testing program in history, the magazine editors
ultimately chose the 2015 Chevy Colorado as the Truck
of the Year.
3. The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado outclassed all of its
competition in design, efficiency, engineering and safety, as
well as several other categories. Only all-new or
“significantly updated” trucks for the new model year were
eligible for consideration.
The 10 vehicles evaluated by MOTOR TREND were:
Chevrolet Colorado WT
Chevrolet Colorado Z71
Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD
GMC Canyon SLT
GMC Sierra Denali 2500 HD
Ford F150 2.7L EcoBoost
Ford F150 3.5L EcoBoost
Ford Transit 150 MR
Ford Transit 350 HR
Ford F-450
4. By unanimous vote, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado won
MOTOR TREND’s Truck of the Year award for 2015, the
editors being particularly impressed with the Colorado’s
new “clean-sheet” design, outstanding handling and overall
general driving capability. The 2015 Colorado’s efficient,
but brawny, powertrain also earned best-in-class fuel-
economy ratings from both the EPA and Real MPG testing.
MOTOR TREND’s editor-in-chief Edward Loh said the
2015 Chevy Colorado is ideally sized and suited for many
of today’s truck buyers. Loh went on to say the Colorado is
both smart and capable, and is an unusually “honest” truck
that makes a strong statement for both value and overall
efficiency.
5. In years past the Colorado had a reputation for poor
handling and being underpowered; however, Chevy went
to work, completely redesigning the 2015 model. Chevy
Trucks’ director of marketing, Sandor Piszar, said the
2015 Chevrolet Colorado offers truck buyers the
adaptability of a pickup truck in a refined and powerful,
fuel-efficient midsize platform that is capable of
delivering up to 27 mpg EPA on the highway. Piszar also
pointed out that for the 2015 Colorado to come out on top
of MOTOR TREND’s thorough assessment and win the
2015 Truck of the Year award shows how the Colorado
has changed the game by offering pickup-truck buyers
fresh choices.
6. MOTOR TREND’s assessment team subjected each of the
truck contenders to several real-world driving tests.
MOTOR TREND’s first series of trials included a 1/4-
mile 0-60 mph acceleration and 60-0 mph braking
without payload test. An identical payload was then added
to each vehicle and the vehicles were driven over 250
miles to the Arizona-Nevada border in an effort to
evaluate both loaded fuel economy and ride quality. The
vehicles were then driven along the famous Davis Dam in
Bullhead City, Arizona for further evaluation; these
assessments included an instrument-monitored test
designed to mimic passing situations when carrying a
load.
7. The MOTOR TREND team then took the vehicles out on
a world-class automotive proving ground for further
instrument acceleration tests with nominally weight
trailers. The trucks with the trailer were also driven along
a short-handling course to evaluate maneuverability,
outward visibility, acceleration and braking. The last
testing stage took the vehicles along a 21-mile loop
through Arizona’s Hualapai Mountains.
8. Following MOTOR TREND’s exhaustive over-the-road
evaluation, all of the trucks were shipped to MOTOR TREND
headquarters in El Segundo, California to go through proprietary
fuel-economy testing. Using the most advanced flow-rate and
exhaust-gas analyzers, Real MPG measured the tailpipe emissions
during an 88-mile three-hour long drive around Los Angeles to
document real-world fuel economy.
After all testing was completed MOTOR TREND editors
assembled to determine which vehicle would be coroneted as
Truck of the Year. The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado was not chosen
as winner from a direct comparison against its competition, but
instead as a result of how each one of its competitors performed
during testing and against the Truck of The Year Award’s six
criteria of Design Advancement, Fuel Efficiency, Engineering
Excellence, Performance, Safety and Value.
