The WHO estimates that 60% of all deaths result from chronic diseases, and 40% of all chronic diseases can be prevented. Biomarkers could play a pivotal role in detecting susceptibility in patients. However, even if detection is delayed to the point the disease has already manifested, biomarkers may also be used in designing personalized treatment options. Ever since I did a population health study using hair samples, in undergrad, I’ve always been interested in the field of biomarkers. If biomarkers could be used to develop diagnostic tools, I think it opens up incredible possibilities
