CORPORATE HISTORY
Shoppers Stop is a leader in the Indian Retail Sector and one of the pioneers in setting up
large format department stores chain in India. The foundation of shopper stop was laid on
October 27th
,199, by the k. Raheja group of companies. Being amongst India’s biggest
hospitality and retail estate players, the group crossed yet another milestone with its lifestyle
venture – shopper stop.
From inception shopper stop has progressed from being a single brand shop to become a fashion and
lifestyle store for the family. Today shopper stop is a household name, known for its superior quality
product services and above all, for providing a complete shopping experience. Shoppers Stop Ltd has
a national presence, with over 2.05 million square feet area across 38 stores (including airport stores)
in 17 cities viz. Mumbai (8 stores), Delhi (4 stores), Kolkata (3 stores), Bangalore (5 stores),
Hyderabad (4 stores), Jaipur (2 stores), Pune (2 stores), Gurgaon, Chennai, Ghaziabad, Lucknow,
Noida, Amritsar, Bhopal, Aurangabad, Durgapur and Siliguri. Shoppers Stop is the only Indian
member of IGDS (Intercontinental Group of Departmental stores) along with 29 other experienced
retailers from all over the world. , which include established stores like Selfridges (England), Karstadt
(Germany), Shanghai No. 1 (China), Matahari (Indonesia), Takashimaya (Japan), C K Tang
(Singapore), Manor (Switzerland) and Lamcy Plaza (Dubai). This membership is restricted to one
member organization per country/region.
Mr. B.S. Nagesh, Customer Care Associate & Vice Chairman, Shopper‟ s Stop Ltd, has been
recognised as an iconic retailer and was inducted into the World Retail Hall of Fame 2008.
Mr. Nagesh is the only Indian retailer to take a significant place alongside more than 100
stalwarts of the global retail industry, which includes veterans like Sam Walton of Wal-Mart,
Giorgio Armani, Jack Cohen of Tesco, Simon Marks and Israel Sieff of Marks & Spencer;
Ingvar Kamprad of Ikea, amongst others. CMAI felicitated the „Golden Scale Trophy‟ to

MILESTONES OF SHOPPER STOP
1991- Began the modern retail revolution in India with the launch of men’s ready to wear
stores at Andheri Mumbai.
1992-offering expanding to include suiting, boys wear and ladies merchandise.
1993-added casual, kids wear, jewellery, fragrances, cosmetic, and watches making shopper
stop India’s first ever departmental store.
1994-shopper stop launched an exclusive loyalty program titled “ the first citizen’s club and
“stop” the first in house label.

1995-first step towards a pan-India presence. Shopper stop launched it second store in
Bangalore.
1996-shopper stop begins its journey of exciting marketing promotions and in store
excitement with a first of it kids “festival of Britain “, celebrated in associated with the
commercial department of the British consulate.
1997-shopper stop incorporated as a body corporate launched parikrama, a festival to
celebrate Indian tradition and culture.
1998-sole retailer to be awarded the international group of departmental store IGDS
membership. Instituted customer care associate as the common designation for all employees.
1999-retail revolution took root in north india with the launches of store in ansal plaza, delhi
and jaipur.
2000-india’s popular chain of bookstore crossword, became a part of shopper stop. Shopper
stop launches in Chennai.
2001-first Indian retail to adopt enterprise resource planning ERP in association with j.d.
Armstrong to strengthen processes.
2003-fashion stepped into the east with the launch of a store in Kolkata.
2004-shopper stop was voted India’s most favoured retail destination of the year by image
retail reward.
2005-homestop- home need specialised store launched in bengaluru. Shopper stop IPO
oversubscribed overall by17.25 times. Crossword became a wholly owned subsidiary of the
company. Brand position changed from “feel the experience” to “shopping and beyond”

2006-mothercare launched in india by shopper stop declared “retailer of the year” at the
image fashion forum.
2007-create movie merchandising history with the unveiling of the om shanti om collection.
The company acquired a19% stake in hypercity. Felicitated the gold shield award by ICAI for
excellence in financial reporting of the year 2006 in the manufacturing and trading enterprise
category.
2008-shopper stop was awarded the “emerging market retailer of the year” at the world retail
congress in april 2008. Mr. Nagesh has been inducted into the “world retail hall of fame” at
the world retail congress in Barcelona. Shopper stop repositioned and reinvented as a “bridge
to luxury” brand with the unveiling of the new logo and tagline, “start something new”.
2009-pioneered mascot licensing through an exclusive tie-up for certain products with
Vodafone for their popular brandmascot zoozoo.
2010-operations expanded to 36 stores across 15 cities.
2011-recognised as the most respected company in the retail sector’ by business world.

TARGET CUSTOMERS
Shopper stop customer falls between the age group of 16yr to 35yr the majority of them being
families young and couples with a monthly household income above rs 20000 and an annual
spend of rs 15000. A large no. of non resident Indians visit the shop for cultural clothes in the
international environment they are used to which means people from abroad are also
interested in shopping in shopper stop. Their target customers are upper middle class and
upper class.

lifestyle store. Shopper stop operates under the departmental store format, and was one of the
pioneers of the large format stores in india.
Shoppers Stop has also introduced new formats in the market viz
HOME STOP – the exclusive home furnishings, décor as well as furniture store.
HYPER CITY– a premium shopping destination for Foods, Home ware, Home
Entertainment, Hi-Tech Appliances, Furniture, Sports, Toys & Fashion.
CROSS WORD It is the leather in the lifestyle book store category with a unique product
mix of books, magazine, CD-ROMs, music, stationery and toys.
MOTHER CARE and early learning centre – it has exclusive arrangements to open mother
care and ELC shop-in-shop in India.
ESTEE LAUDER GROUP OF COMPANIES – it has entered into a non exclusive retail
agreement with world cosmetic major Estee launder to open stores for international brands
like M.A.C, Estee launders and Clinique in India.
