Nitrogen from agriculture – an increasing threat to the environment
The creation of reactive nitrogen each year by human activity is greater than all natural
sources combined and over the last century has increased seven fold. Intensification of
agriculture and the associated ammonia (NH3
), nitrous oxide (N2
0) and NOx emissions
have played a key role in this increase, and agriculture today accounts for a major
part of total nitrogen emissions. Such emissions, in turn, contribute significantly to
environmental impact criteria such as global warming potential (GWP), eutrophication
potential (EP) and acidification potential (AP).
With a predicted 21st
century population increase and a desire to consume more
animal protein, growth in nitrogen emissions is set to continue unless changes are
made to the way agriculture operates.
Life cycle analysis (LCA) for more informed decisions
LCA allows the environmental impact associated with changes to the broiler
production cycle to be assessed. Studies examining the effect of adding RONOZYME®
ProAct to broiler diets found that GWP, EP and AP were all reduced by addition of the
protease. Such benefits were associated with use of lower protein diets, less use of
soybean meal, and similar or improved performance of broilers.
Balancing environment and economics
LCA output can help make informed decisions concerning the environment.
