Another Mobile World Congress has come and gone. I won’t spend much time here wrapping it up as by
now you have seen many summary write ups. The only thing I’ll add, beyond it being busy and exciting,
is that times have changed from two years ago as this year I couldn’t even get into my favorite
restaurant – reservations for the week were all taken! Two years ago I walked in and sat down without a
reservation. I’ll make up for it in Orlando by riding Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom.
With Mobile World Congress a distant memory, it’s time to start thinking about this year’s CTIA show in
Orlando Florida. I know, you still haven’t recovered, but CTIA gives us the opportunity to emphasize
some of the areas that may not have come out while you were in Barcelona.

For those of you that come from an Evolved Packet Core view of the world, at CTIA we will have experts
to discuss the role the EPC plays in all three solutions and more! EPC is the key anchor point of Mobile
Videoscape, the intelligence in Adaptive Intelligent Routing, and the tie-in to the mobile core for our SP
WiFi solution.
Last year in your rush to see the Beatles Love show by Cirque de Soleil, you may have missed that we
demonstrated the first 3G to 4G packet core handoff in the industry. This year we are showing how
deploying the Cisco EPC can actually lower the overall cost of the network. Results of an analysis by ACG
[link to paper] show that we can reduce the cost of the RAN by up to 30% by leveraging the intelligence
of the Cisco network. This essentially makes the packet core solution better than free – by simply
turning on some software.
Another area we are excited to talk about at CTIA is Voice over LTE. This is not a new solution, as Cisco
has demonstrated multiple forms of Voice over LTE, including:
Circuit Switch Fallback (CSFB) for voice including SMS over the SGs interface
Voice over LTE using IMS – The Cisco Megatest as part of the Light Reading sponsored testing
included testing of Voice over LTE
2. MSC as a TAS: Very exciting way to migrate to IMS leveraging your existing MSC without totally
ripping out your network
Finally, as my colleague Mike Capuano states in his blog, “the question is no longer if IPv6 is going to find
its rightful place but when.” The Evolved Packet Core standard is anchored in IPv6 with Cisco’s ASR 5000
enabling the transition from IPv4 to IPv6. We are excited to talk to you at CTIA about our IPv6 support
in mobile networks. The EPC is key component of Cisco’s Carrier-Grade IPv6 (CGv6) solution with the
three approaches of Preserve, Prepare, and Prosper.
I look forward to discussing M.O.VE and all of these issues at CTIA. It will be nice to be warm again – at
least for a few days.
