Ordinarily, it is difficult to generalize operational research conducted at one library to the environment of another. Different survey instruments, user populations, and sampling techniques make direct comparisons difficult. Despite these clear differences, libraries continue to use this literature to plan new services. There is a clear need to establish a baseline for comparison. The use of web server log statistical reports and other web analytics may offer this baseline. Such reports are now available to most libraries, and offer a rich, and consistent, look at library user behavior. This data tells a rich story about library use, and offers a valid point of comparison between institutions. The Orbis-Cascade Alliance Research Interest Group presents these initial results as our first collaborative effort. We argue that differences between institutional environments that have long been assumed are now clearly visible in simple metrics such as most-viewed pages, point-of-entry, and peak hours. These points of comparison are analyzed for three types of Alliance libraries: a public and a private four year residential campus, and an urban commuter university. The analysis offers empirical evidence of the commonalities and differences between these member libraries.

"Librarian building blocks" will explore recent changes and needs in librarianship, introduce strategies for learning new skills, and inspire participants to implement these skills. This presentation is for a general audience and will cover skills for all libraries. To build the ideal librarian, we determined what skills and knowledge a contemporary librarian needs to succeed. Since job postings and MLIS curriculum reflect current, popular trends in librarianship, we developed a data harvesting Python script that gathered the data for more than 600 librarian job postings and MLIS curriculum content. Based on this data, we will present which skills are being taught and which skills need to be taught. The presentation will explore what these changes in technology and librarianship mean for current librarians and how they can stay up to date in the continuously evolving field of librarianship.

Abstract: Information organization and systems in libraries are in a state of significant flux. In systems there is a shift to XML and RDF-based schemas and ontologies while resource description content standards have changed from AACR2 to RDA. A move from MARC to BIBFRAME and other linked data applications is on the horizon. Linked data and the semantic web have become buzzwords, but what is linked data and why it is important for librarians? How can we use it in digital curation? What can libraries do now to “prepare” for this change in their current practice? In light of these questions, the panel presentation will discuss two projects. First, there will be coverage of a sample project using the Fedora-based open source framework, Islandora to demonstrate the concepts of connecting related data across the Web with URIs, HTTP and RDF. The second half of the presentation will describe how a consortia has taken a holistic approach to writing an RDA workflow to help front-line cataloguers develop a wider perspective when it comes to resource description (creating more structured, future compatible metadata). Up for discussion: the current state and future possibilities of library metadata with a focus on the implications of linked data.

Morville & Rosenfeld's "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web" positioned IA as an approach to web/interface design that is deeply embedded in, and strongly informed by, the LIS discipline. To re-consider of the impact of the LIS discipline on the IA profession, this presentation (and a subsequent paper) reports the preliminary results of an analysis of syllabi of information architecture courses offered by graduate schools of Library and Information Science in the United States and Canada. Presented for the Teaching IA workshop at the 2014 IA Summit in San Diego, CA.

What Can IA Learn from LIS? Perspectives from LIS Education

A key feature of relational database applications is managing plural relationships—one-to-many and many-to-many—between entities. However, since it is often infeasible to adopt or develop a new database application for any given schema at hand, information workers instead turn to spreadsheets, which lend themselves poorly to schemas requiring multiple related entity sets. In this project, we propose to reduce the cost-usability gap between spreadsheets and tailor-made relational database applications by extending the spreadsheet paradigm to let the user establish relationships between rows in related worksheets as well as view and navigate the hierarchical cell structure that arises as a result. We present Related Worksheets, a spreadsheet-like prototype application, and evaluate it with a screencast-based user study on 36 Mechanical Turk workers. First-time users of our software were able to solve lookup-type query tasks with the same or higher accuracy as subjects using Microsoft Excel, in one case 40% faster on average.

Queries which cannot be answered by FTAs are transferred to higher level experts. These experts are Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) of State Departments of Agriculture (SDAs), ICAR Institutes, KVKs and State Agricultural Universities (SAUs). A Kisan Knowledge Management System (KKMS) has been developed to capture all the details of the caller and sending gist of answer given through SMS. KKMS has its independent website : http://dackkms.gov.in. The KCC, FTAs working at various KCC locations throughout the country have access to this website through their specific IDs and password provided to them.
