3. Abstract There is little research that links the relationship between alcohol abuse and domestic violence. Alcohol use increases the severity of reported domestic trauma. People who abuse alcohol need treatment now before it gets worse. Healthcare providers and Insurance Companies can help.

4. What we know: Alcohol effects each person on a different level. Alcohol alters judgement, speech, movements and response time. There is little research to link alcohol and domestic violence, though it increases the act of violence (Bell et al 2009). We can help raise awareness about alcohol abuse interventions.

5. What can we do to help: Increase the tax on alcohol, making it more expensive and limiting its availability (Grossman & Markowitz 1998) Insurance companies offer screening, interventions or employee assisted programs (EAP) for people who show signs of early alcohol abuse (McCue 2010) Physicial screening by survey for depression, alcohol or domestic abuse at office visits (Ebell 2004)

6. Discussion: Common theme is there is little data to link domestic violence and alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse effects the abuser and the family of the abuser. Factors linked to domestic violence may be prior abuse history, mutual dispute or psychological disorder.

7. Future Research Focus on how helpful intervention tactics are. Research the physician level to determine successful contact and intervention placement. Research the insurance level regarding successful completion of intervention. Research the insurance level regarding sustained sobriety.

8. Discussion Physicians can help with surveys and patient screening. Insurance companies can help with screening and offering EAPs to employees. Intervention is vital before the abuser hits rock bottom.
