Business Improvement Team
January 2010
Tuesday, May 08, 2012 Process mapping & Lean 1
2. How we build up a process map
• Brown paper and
Post-its!
• On Post-it notes,
write down each
stage of the process
• On the brown paper
mark out “swim
lanes”
• Stick them on the
map and draw lines
between
• Refine until complete
Process mapping 2
3. Creating the “as is” map
• Once the brown paper map is complete, a BPMN process
map is created.
• BPMN symbols include:
Process mapping and Lean 3
4. Process maps – an example

10. Want to know more?
• This was a simple and brief overview – there are lots
of good Web resources available, e.g.
– BizAgi Process Modeler – a freeware, highly functional
BPMN compliant application (http://bit.ly/3nVIJM);
– Open Management Group’s BPMN site
(http://www.bpmn.org/);
– A poster showing all the BPMN symbols with brief
description of each one (http://bit.ly/6IBZxI)
