Mode of Address
Examples of formal language in 3rd
person
Headline - word “relies” implies police need
help from outside sources and are weak
Influences for this type of
mode
• Target audience - middle-aged people, ABC1
• Genre - technology news
• Format - Headline, image, tagline, article with
images embedded in it
• Expectation - formal language, small text so you
have to read the article carefully, few pictures, high
reading age
Images used in the article
Use of images
The images used in the article aren’t used to
persuade the reader, but simply to show people what
Windows XP looks like and to break up the article.
The image of the policewoman working on a computer
helps to make the story more tangible as the reader
can see a specific case study and can empathise
more easily. There are no videos used in the article.

The same article in The Inquirer
newspaper
Comparison of the two news
provider’s mode of address
• The language used in this article isn’t as sophisticated as in the BBC’s article, but it is still purely
formal in tone.
• The headline, like with the BBC’s article, is fairly straightforward. However, saying “20%” could be
misleading as 20 percent of their computers could just be 10 computers, which isn’t enough to be
worried about.
• Both articles are in third person.
• Genre: BBC - Technology, The Inquirer - Security
• Target audience: BBC - middle-aged, ABC1; The Inquirer - anyone interested in technology news
• Format: BBC - headline, image, tagline, article with images embedded in it; The Inquirer - headline,
tagline, image, article
• Expectation: BBC - formal language, small text so you have to read the article carefully, few pictures,
high reading age; The Inquirer - news to be focused around tech, a fairly high reading age but not too
high as it is meant for any socio-economic group
• The BBC uses images to show real people being affected by the issues, but The Inquirer uses only
one image, most likely to just help people see what the article about without reading it in detail.

Paragraphing and sentence
structure
• BBC - longest paragraph is 3 lines. All paragraphs are
between 1 and 3 lines long.
• The Inquirer - longest paragraph is 5 lines. Paragraphs
vary between 2 and 5 lines.
• BBC - range of sentence structures. Most sentences are
simple but some complex and compound sentences as
well.
• The Inquirer - mostly compound sentences, but a mix of
simple, compound and complex.
Use of speech
• BBC - uses direct speech from officials to back up
facts, e.g. “"Disclosing further information would
reveal potential weaknesses and vulnerability," the
force's information manager, Paul Mayger, said.”
• The Inquirer - doesn’t use as much speech as the
BBC’s article. Uses direct speech like the BBC, e.g.
“"The remaining XP machines are still in place due
to complex technical requirements from a small
number of externally provided highly specialised
applications," a spokeswoman told Auntie Beeb.”
