1. When it comes to our home we like to maintain everything clean and tidy. But do you ever think
about your work place? With so many people in the office it's hard to keep it all under control.
There's a lot of information on the Internet about the dirtiest places in the office but not so many
articles tell you how to fight the microbes back.
The Most Germy Places In the Office
You probably already know that, well, microbes are everywhere. But still, which are the places
where you''ll find most of them?
•Door handles;
•Keyboard/mouse;
•Microwave door handles;
•Refrigerator door handles;
•Phone;
•Fax / Copy machine;
•Vending machine buttons.
Of course you can't avoid all of these, after all you have work to do. But that doesn't mean that
you can't protect yourself. So here are a few ways you can do that.
How To Fight The Enemy
It's a good idea to use different sanitisers for your work area. Plain water can't do the same job
as products specially developed to clean and disinfect. If you are concerned about the
chemicals, there are various options of environmentally friendly cleaning products on the
market.
#1. Wash your hands
Your mother wasn't lying that bad things will happen if you don't. Use antibacterial soap and
warm water, and wash for at least 15-20 seconds (sing the 'Washing hands song' maybe). If
there isn't a hand dryer use disposable bathroom napkins. Don't go overboard with this advice
though. Washing your hands too frequently can cause damage and dry and flaky skin can
spread bacteria more easily.
2. 2#. Use Alcohol
Don't get me wrong. I'm not telling you to drink while at work, leave that for the Christmas office
party. I mean that it's better if you use hand sanitizer that contains alcohol, cause it's one of the
best germ-killing agents.
On average hand sanitizers contain 62% of ethanol and that's fine because to be effective the
least amount in the product should be 60%. So keep the sanitising gel on your desk and use it
regularly (especially if you tend to have little snacks there).
#3. Get a pack of wet wipes
Or a few of them – antibacterial, office, special ones for your monitor and keyboard. You don't
have to bring a whole cleaning arsenal to your job. Wet wipes are easy to use, don't take a lot of
space and they are effective.
3. #4. Know the surfaces around your work place
And use the right products for them. For example: if your desk is wooden, get cleaners
/especially/ made for wood. Note that some products may cause harm instead of help you. This
can happen if you use them for purposes, different than what they were created for.
#5. Wash all utensils regularly
If you use glasses, mugs, bottles and other kitchen utensils at work, be sure to wash them
thoroughly with hot water and soap. Also better use glass and stainless steel instead of plastic,
since some plastic products have high amount of hazardous chemicals.
#6. Don't rub your eyes (face) too often
Around 80% of infections are transmitted through touch and your dirty little fingers are the main
tool to spread diseases. Better itchy eyes, than a serious eye infection.
4. To tell you a little secret, you don't have to do all of the office cleaning on you own. Those are
some of the things you can do yourself but truth is that if there isn't someone to properly clean
the office, your efforts might be in vain. And even if you've hired a person for the job, this can
hardly resolve all of your problems.
There are companies in London that have trained teams and offer excellent* commercial
cleaning* services. You can even get a free quote from your office cleaning London company.
The best part is that you choose when and how often you want your office to be cleaned.
Why use professional help? Well, It's hard to keep large offices clean if you don't have the right
assistance, and the statistics are rather frightening.
According to a survey made* back in 2011:
•70% of employees admit to coming into the office while sick;
•Only 15% clean their workplace at least once a day;
•Less than 10% clean their keyboard and phone (and they know these are the dirtiest places);
•Less than 10% say they clean their desk surface very often with sanitising products.
You might not have bacillophobia but these facts are still concerning. And if you avoid a flu shot,
why not at least use some of these advices. It's not necessarily fun but it will for sure reduce your
chances to get in a hospital.
