3. First…
I apologize if some of my email responses were slow toward the
end of the week. I had another series of bad days (being sick like
this just sort of sucks, to use colorful language). I should be
caught up on all the questions, but if I missed one, let me know.
That said, I noticed something that’s kind of alarming in the
questions this week. Some of you aren’t reading the things I send
out closely, because people have been asking me about due
dates and where to put things/what an assignment is, and I can
easily look at the PowerPoint for last week and see the answer.
Make sure you’re reading things carefully and closely. It’s
important. I’m not going to continue to repeat things I’ve said
already, not because I don’t value you enough to answer the
questions but because you need to learn, as college students, to
use the resources you have. If I look it up instead of making you
look it up, you don’t learn to find the information you need.
4. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Obviously I wasn’t healthy enough to come back this
week. At this point, I’m so demoralized I don’t want
to say, “but I’ll make it next week!” but I am hopeful.
I haven’t been able to grade the mix CDs because I
don’t have all of them yet. I’ll make sure to get them
sometime this week regardless.
The rest of the grading should be up
to date by class time Monday.
5. Readings…
There are several readings over IP law and remix this week. Two
of them are alphabetic texts and three are videos. There’s an
optional 4th video that is over an hour long, if you find the topic
fascinating.
Please do the readings in the order they are posted, but watch the
Week 10: Remix Law PowerPoint first. There are some things that
build off each other that won’t make as much sense if you read
them out of order.
You will have two forum posts stemming from the readings, which
I will get to in just a bit.
6. Activity: Care Bear
This activity is fairly
straightforward. I want you
to take the blank Care
Bear image to the right
(linked from the page) and
turn it into some sort of
Care Bear if your design.
You can do this via photo
editing or by printing and
using art supplies. That’s
your choice. You just need
to be able to get an image
of it to me by the due date.
7. Tumblr Posts
It seems like the assigning 3 prompts might be
working a little better for people, so I’ll do that
again.
For this week:
1) Read assignment 4 carefully, then post
what you sense is the most common use of
remix or remix-style thinking in your
academic discipline.
2) Locate a photoshop or other photo editing
tutorial online that you think is useful, and
post a link to it along with a brief
explanation of why you find it useful.
8. And your list…
The five things you are most thankful for this year.
(oh noes! Thanksgiving question one day after
Halloween!)
9. Forum Posts
For the first forum, entitled “Lessing and IP
Law” I want you to pull any one idea from the
various Lessig videos, restate it, then write a
few paragraphs about how you agree or
disagree with Lessig’s position AND why the
idea you chose to highlight is important.
10. Forum 2…
For the other forum, entitled “Obama Hope Poster” I
want you to consider the case of Shepard Fairey’s
Obama poster. Can you think of other places that
liknesses are in dispute. And– here’s the kicker–
should or shouldn’t President Obama himself have
some voice in a dispute over an image of his face?
Why or why not?
11. DUE DATE REMINDERS
Making Project 3 is due on November 5th. That is this
coming Friday.
Project 2, the podcast/audio essay, is due on
November 12th, which is the Friday after next.
Making Project 4 will be due on Sunday, November
14th with your work for that week.
Project 4 itself is due on the 19th of November, which is
the Friday after the Friday after next.
