• Use Firefox or Chrome or Edge or Safari (Mac)

• Log in to myUniHub and go to My Study > My Library

Set up a RefWorks account
• Click No account? Sign up here
• Use your @live.mdx.ac.uk email address and any password
• Verify via your @live.mdx.ac.uk email > see next slide
• myUniHub > My Study > My Library > Databases > R > RefWorks
• OR https://refworks.proquest.com

Setting up an account continued…
• Verify account via University email
• myUniHub > My Middlesex > My Email
• Check Junk email folder
• Complete RefWorks form

If asked to choose Legacy RefWorks (orange) or New RefWorks (blue):
 Tick box and choose New RefWorks

Action: add to RefWorks
• Find a Full Text article with Google Scholar
• Add to RefWorks
• Save PDF to desktop for later

Your RefWorks library
If you are in Last Imported, click All References

Tools – save from internet to RefWorks
• Drag and drop in your browser
toolbar/bookmarks bar
• If you cannot see your browser
toolbar…next
Tools > Tools > Install Save to RefWorks > drag & drop black button

Add a web page to RefWorks
• Go to a web site
• Click Save to RefWorks button in browser
• Select the item to save (if required)
• Click Save to RefWorks

Action: add web pages to RefWorks
• Set up Save to RefWorks
• Add something from the internet
• Possible problems:
• Bad data
• Records may need editing (see later)

Word > Insert > Get Add-ins > RefWorks > Add >
RCM tab > Login to sync
You must be logged into your Microsoft Account for the add-in to work

RCM cite this
TASK:
• Type some text
• Press Enter twice to add two lines after your text
• Add a heading: References
• Press Enter twice to add blank lines after References
• Click in text where you want to cite
• Add space after the final word but before full stop
• Click Cite This
• Citation and reference list automatically created

RCM – instant citation and reference
• Citation and reference automatically created
• If reference creation default is off – next slide…

RCM – if references don’t appear
• Bibliography generation default is off – switch on

Click the reference
Click Edit this
In the suffix box add:
• 1 x comma
• 1 x space
• p. OR pp.
• 1 x space
• Number OR
• Number – Number
• Full stop
Untick Author for date
only citation
e.g. Kim and Shumaker
(2015, p.21) state that…

RCM – change citation style
Remember to refresh document if you change or edit references

Action: create references
• Set up RefWorks Citation Manager
• Write something
• Create a citation and reference
• Change the citation style

Perfecting your references – normal view

Perfecting … – table view, find duplicates

Perfecting … – edit your references
• Is the resource type correct? If not change it
• Click title > lightning bolt by title – overwrites reference
• Click title > lightning bolt by DOI - apply changes to add to reference
• Manual edit e.g. tags

Action: perfecting references
• Try different views
• Check for duplicates
• Citation view
• Edit a reference

Upload pdf to saved reference - best
Open the reference > drop in the PDF
PDF added to high quality reference

Upload pdf - drag and drop
• RefWorks creates reference from information in the PDF
• Will need to edit the reference created

Upload pdf – add and upload
+ Add > Upload Documents > File Upload > Click file
Useful when finding files in folders

Action: saving pdfs
• Drop PDF into a reference
OR
• Drag and drop in to RW, then
• Edit the reference

Saving to folders in RefWorks
Main folder: Separate instances of RefWorks for different projects
My folders: Create and sort folders for different parts of a project
• Create folders and sub folders
• Populate by dragging and dropping from All References.
• You can have a reference in more than one folder

Share your folders
Invite other RefWorks users to read, annotate or modify

Action: folders and sharing
• Create a folder
• Create a sub folder
• Share a folder
