The Ladder of Participation is a model created by Ross Mayfield that outlines 8 levels of participation in decision making, ranging from non-participation to full citizen control. The levels include manipulation, decoration, tokenism, assigned but informed, consulted and informed, adult-initiated shared decisions with children, child-initiated and directed, and child-initiated shared decisions with adults. The ladder provides a framework for understanding different degrees of participation and how to meaningfully involve others in decision making processes.
