Start By:
A. Remove the tandem. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tandem and Cover - Remove".
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Remove four of bolts (1) that are equally spaced. Install Tooling (A) in order to support
final drive (2). Remove the remaining bolts (1) .
Note: Use one of bolts (1) in order to retain the final drive.

2. Use Tooling (B) in order to separate final drive (2) from differential housing (3). Remove
Tooling (B) .
3. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device onto final drive (2). The weight of final
drive (2) is approximately 735 kg (1620 lb). Remove final drive (2) .

4. Remove O-ring seal (4) .
5. Remove thrust washers (5). Remove shims (6). Remove Tooling (A) .

6. Remove bolts (7) and retainer (8). Attach Tooling (D) onto ring gear (9). The weight of ring
gear (9) is approximately 58 kg (128 lb). Remove the remaining bolts (7) and retainers (8).
Use Tooling (D) in order to remove ring gear (9) .
7. Remove plug (10). Attach Tooling (C) onto housing (11). The weight of housing (11) is
approximately 231 kg (510 lb). Remove bolts (12). Remove retainers (13). Remove housing
(11) .

8. Remove lip seal (14). Remove wear ring (15). Remove thrust washer (16) .

A. Remove the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".

2. Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove sprocket (4). The weight of sprocket (4) is
approximately 93 kg (205 lb).

bearing (20) and bearing (23). Remove spacer (24) .
15. Repeat Step 12 through Step 14 for the remaining planetary gears.

1. Install spacer (24) . Install bearing (23) and bearing (20) . Install thrust washer (22) and
thrust washer (21) . Install planetary gear (19) .
2. Install retaining ring (18) .

3. Install planetary shaft (17) .
4. Repeat Step 1 through Step 3 for the remaining planetary gears.
5. Install thrust washer (16) .
6. Install sun gear (15) .

8. Install retainer (13) . Apply Tooling (B) onto bolts (12) . Install bolts (12) .
9. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (11) . Install bearing cone (11) .

10. Install lip seal (10) . Lower the temperature of bearing cup (9) . Install bearing cup (9) .
Turn over housing (6) . Lower the temperature of bearing cup (8) . Install bearing cup (8) .
Lower the temperature of bearing cone (7) . Install bearing cone (7) .

11. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device in order to install housing (6) . The weight of
housing (6) is approximately 250 kg (550 lb).
12. Use a suitable lifting device in order to install sprocket (5) . The weight of sprocket (5) is

14. Sprockets (5) and (4) are to be installed as shown.
15. Use Tooling (C) in order to install adjustment ring (3) . Rotate the sprockets and tap on the
sprockets with a hammer in order to seat the bearings. Tighten adjustment ring (3) . Use
Tooling (D) in order to check the rolling torque. The rolling torque must be between 15 to
45 N·m (11.06 to 33.19 lb ft). Install lock (2) . Install bolts (1) .
End By: Install the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Install".

1. Apply Tooling (E) onto thrust washer (16) . Install thrust washer (16) . Install wear ring (15)
with the diagonal cut toward the top. Lubricate lip seal (14) with the lubricant that is being
sealed. Install lip seal (14) with the split that is in the lip seal toward the top and positioned
as shown above. Apply Tooling (E) onto Surface (X) .
2. Use Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device in order to install housing (11) . The weight of
housing (11) is approximately 231 kg (510 lb). Install retainers (13) . Install bolts (12) .
Tighten bolts (12) to a torque of 15 ± 3 N·m (11 ± 2 lb ft). Install plug (10) . Tighten plug
(10) to a torque of 16 N·m (12 lb ft). Use a suitable soft hammer in order to drive the wear
ring into housing (11) until the edge of the wear ring is flush with the top of the bore.
Note: Ensure that retainers (12) completely cover the split that is in the lip seal.

3. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device in order to install ring gear (9) . The weight of
ring gear (9) is approximately 58 kg (128 lb). Apply Tooling (F) onto bolts (7) . Install
retainers (8) and bolts (7) . Remove Tooling (D) . Install the remaining retainer (8) and bolts
(7) .

4. Use Tooling (G) in order to measure the thickness of housing (2B) at four locations.
Average the four measurements and record the average measurement as Dimension (A) .
5. Install Tooling (A) . Apply Tooling (E) onto thrust washers (5) . Install thrust washers (5) .
Note: Do not install shims (6) at this time.
