Removal Procedure
Start By:
a. Remove the tandem housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tandem Housing -
Remove".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.
1. Drain the power train oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of
the power train system is 47 L (12 US gal).

2. Attach a suitable lifting device to final drive (1). Remove nuts (2).
3. Remove final drive (1). Use pry bars (3) in order to balance final drive (1). The weight of
final drive (1) is approximately 272 kg (600 lb).

Start By:
A. Remove the final drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the
component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal
mechanism.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Remove shaft (1). Use two people to remove carrier (2). The weight of carrier (2) is
approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

2. Remove bolts (3) and retainer (4). Remove shaft (5). Remove washers (6) and gear (8).
Remove roller assemblies (7) from gear (8.). Repeat this step for the remaining gears.

3. Use Tooling (A) in order to remove retaining ring (9). Remove washer (10) .

4. Remove bolts (11) and retainers (12). Remove ring gear (13) .
5. Remove bolt (14) and lock (15). Remove nut (16). Remove sprockets (17). Remove bearing
cone (18). Remove shaft (19) .

6. Use a suitable press in order to remove bearing cone (20) from shaft (19) .

7. Remove bearing cup (21) and seal (22) .
8. Remove bolts (23) and retainer (24). Remove shims (25). Remove bearing cup (26) .

9. Remove O-ring seal (27) .

10. Install Tooling (B) and remove housing (28) .
11. Remove washer (29) and seal (30) .

12. Remove rings (31) and washer (32) .

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned
in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts.
Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are
worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

1. Apply Tooling (G) to the surface of the housing.
2. Install washer (32). Apply Tooling (G) to washer (32) prior to installation.
3. Install seal (30). Seal (30) must be flush with the end of housing (28) .
4. Install housing (28). the weight of housing (28) is approximately 68 kg (150 lb).
5. Install Tooling (B) and attach a suitable lifting device.

6. Apply Tooling (G) to rings (31) and install rings (31) .
Note: The split on rings (31) should be installed 90 degrees from each other.
7. Apply Tooling (G) to washer (29) and install washer (29) .

8. Install O-ring seal (27) .
9. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (26) and install bearing cup (26). Install shims (25).
Install retainer (24) and bolts (23). Tighten bolts (23) to a torque of 270 ± 15 N·m (199 ± 11
lb ft).

10. Use Tooling (E) to measure the end play. Adjust shims (25) in order to obtain an end play
measurement of 0.025 mm (0.0010 inch) to 0.076 mm (0.0030 inch).

11. Use Tooling (F) to install seal (22) .
12. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (21) and install bearing cup (21) .
13. Raise the temperature of bearing cone (20) and install bearing cone (20) on shaft (19) .
14. Install bearing cone (18), sprockets (17), and nut (16). Hand tighten nut (16) .
Note: The sprockets must be out-of-phase.

15. Mount final drive (19A) on Tooling (C). Install shaft (19) .
16. Tighten nut (16) to a torque of 11 ± 1 N·m (100 ± 10 lb in) rotating sprockets (17). Loosen
nut (16) by one locking position. Rap the hub of sprockets (17). Check the rotational torque
and record the torque. Tighten nut (16) until the rotational torque is 4 ± 1 N·m (35 ± 10 lb
in) above the recorded torque. Install lock (15) and a new bolt (14) .

Note: Bolts (11) must be replaced with a new bolt.
17. Install ring gear (13). Install retainers (12) and bolts (11) .

18. Install washer (10). Use Tooling (A) in order to install retaining ring (9) .
Note: Bolts (3) must be replaced with a new bolt.
19. Install rollers (7) in gear (8). Install gear (8) and washers (6). Install shaft (5). Install retainer
(4) and bolts (3). Repeat this step for the remaining gears.
