2. Introduction
She was born in Saint-Mandé, France as Émilie Claudette
Chauchoin. Her family moved to the United States when
she was three years old. As she grew up, Claudette
wanted nothing more than to play for Broadway
audiences. After graduate school, her career took off.
3. Fact #1: One 1916 evening in New York during
Claudette’s high school time, her life changed in an
instant. As she was rushing to get home from swimming
lessons just like her mother wished, she stepped off the
street curb, right in front of a truck. She suffered a
broken ankle and knee, and she had spine injuries. She
had to lay in bed for 4 months, not being able to move or
do anything. Then she walked with crutches for 5 months
and after that, with a cane. Her acting ability started to
really develop as she dramatized her illness and
continued to use her cane a long time after she really
needed it. During all of this time, her life began to change
forever. Acting was in her near future.

productions. Her career included:
• Acted in 64 films
• Appeared on 7 TV shows
• Performed in 19 Broadway plays
• Appeared in 21 radio occurrences
“Blithe Spirit” (1956)
5. FACT #3: When she was being filmed, most of the
scenes showed her left profile. She hardly ever
wanted her whole face or right side shown in shots.
During one experience, a cameraman called her
right outline, “the dark side of the moon”.
