Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

First of all, let us talk about who we are.
We are from Rits University, which is located in Shiga Prefecture in Japan. Actually, we have three campuses in Japan, one is in Shiga, which is famous for the biggest lake in Japan, another in Kyoto ancient capital of Japan, and the other one in Osaka, which opened this year. We are the teachers of the colleges of Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Our biggest goal of today’s presentation is to inform you of the attraction of Bibliobattle and to find someone who can collaborate with us in the future.
Bibliobattle is considered a social book review game, which was invented by Tadahiro Taniguchi when he was at Kyoto University. Now, the players in Japan amount to more than 5,200, and games are played at many different venues such as universities, schools, libraries, companies and houses, etc. The game is called social, because the concept of the game is “to get to know books through people, to get to know people through books.” So, people play Bibliobattle while enjoying meeting new people or finding out different aspects of the people they already know.
I want to show how it is booming in Japan. The number of games held in Japan, has been increasing greatly over the past 4-5 years. It was 230 in 2011, and last year it was 1354. These numbers include small games involving small groups of people and also large games involving large groups.
The largest game is probably this one, Japan Bibliobattle for University Students. At last year’s event, 874 students from 130 different universities took part. The final was in Kyoto last year, but before the final, a lot of qualifying rounds were held all over Japan. The champion-book was “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour bookstore” by Robin Sloan. I said the champion-book. Well, it’s a really important element of this game. We don’t elect a champion. We elect a book. So it’s not about a good presentation or how attractive the person is, but simply a book everyone wants to read that deserves to be considered a champion.
Now let’s look at the official rules for Bibliobattle. Players get together with a book, and then introduce that book for 5 minutes. Strictly for 5 minutes. This is a rule. After each presentation, we have a Q&A session for about 3 minutes. After all the presentations have been completed, we’ll vote and decide on the champion-book. The criterion is that you vote for a book that you want to read the most. So choosing a good book for the audience is a very important winning strategy.
This is about Bibliobattle in Japan, in Japanese.
What we have been working on is Bibliobattle in English. We thought it would work because our students are keen on presenting their ideas in English. They have been seeking opportunities to present in English. Furthermore, it’s just fun because it’s a game.
In our previous studies, it was found that Bibliobattle can be played by a group with a great diversity in English proficiency. Because we vote for a book and not for a person, there is a good chance for even a basic-level English learner to win. It’s sometimes great that we, teachers, are beaten by our students. We don’t get hurt because it’s our book that was beaten. But after each event, especially when they lose, players devise tactics to win by themselves, which leads to active learning and motivation for taking part in the next Bibliobattle. Therefore, Bibliobattle can an opportunity to stimulate a self-learning process.
Play a game, look back on the game and devise tactics for the next game, choose a new book and read it carefully again, and join the next game. We do it in English, so it’s a very good English learning process.
Now let us look at some examples of the events we have held so far. As we said earlier, this game can be played by different types of groups. So I want to show you some of the cases. Type A is a group that consists of Japanese students only. This is easier for beginners to join. Also, it’s a good first step. Actually, we decided to hold this event, because students told us that they wanted to do it with beginners only.
Type B consists of Japanese students and foreign students. In this case, it makes more sense to do it in English. It involves real communication between Japanese students and foreign students.
Type C is Japanese students and Japanese adults. As you know, there are a lot of adult English learners in Japan. We are also adult English learners. In this case, they can meet people from different backgrounds.
Type D is a mixed group. This is good for advanced learners or native English speakers. In this case, it’s not a practice anymore. It’s a real game.

As you know, in the laboratory, graduate students usually choose a paper to read together. For this process, Taniguchi used the mechanism of Bibliobattle, choosing a paper that everyone wanted to read the most. After that, Bibliobattle was developed more in a closed community and later, also in an open community.
In the case of English Bibliobattle, English can be a very strong tool to break down the borders between closed communities, even across countries. Facebook is one example. To be honest, it’s not always easy to find brave players who are willing to compete in English. That is one reason why we started to used online tools, to appeal to more people, who are outside of the community.

By using an online tool to call for players, we can reach people who we haven’t yet met, and also, people can exchange information before and after the event. After the event, we upload videos of presentations so that people who didn’t join can watch them. They might join the next game. So by using online tools, we can get to know about more books and contact more people
Furthermore, we thought that bibliobattle itself can be played online, too. We did an experiment.
I’ll introduce our experiment with a remote participant. We held this event last May in Kyoto. Please look at the map. Here is Kyoto. A person on the display participated from Tokyo. Here is Tokyo. From Tokyo to Kyoto it takes two and half hour by bullet train. so we used skype to communicate. To proceed smoothly, we used two displays. One is the big one and…
..and the other is a small one. Let us show you a video of the event. This is Question and answer session after his speech. In the middle of the event, we experienced a little time lag between the images and sound and the Internet disconnections several times, but overall it went very smoothly without any serious problem . We can say that we were able to create a similar situation to ordinary face to face Bibliobattle.
After the event we got comments from the participant, the guy joined from Tpkyo with skype. He said he didn’t feel any communication problem. In addition, although this was the first Bibliobattle for him, he could relax because of good atmosphere, He also added participating with skype in a remote place made him want to see the other participants face to face. Actually after all participants speech, he guided around his university Tokyo university using skype. Using online tools enables to meet and know new people and books from all over the world. We believe that it makes perfect sense to do Bibliobattle in English.
Let me wrap up today’s presentation. Bibliobattle is a social book review game, the concept of which is to get to know books through people and get to know people through books. It’s already prevalent in Japan, and the English version of the game is working well, too. As English is the global communication language, no matter where the players are based, it can be played online by people on every continent and in any country.
