15. INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL SECTOR:
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals
with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally
built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and
buildings.

The building of something, typically a large
structure.
Clearing, excavating, and grading of land and
other activity associated with buildings,
structures, or other types of real property such as
bridges, dams, roads.
18. Construction industry is the second largest industry of the
country.

development.
It includes hospitals, schools, townships, offices, houses and
other building.
19. TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION :

22. WHY CONSTRUCTION???
Development of world class infrastructure is
required to achieve faster growth of the economy.
Considering the critical need of developing

26. GLOBAL CONSTRUCTION 2020
Growth in Asian powerhouses and a cyclical rebound in the us will
fuel massive growth in world construction over next 10 years.
Global construction to grow by 70% from $7.2 trillion today to
$12 trillion by 2020.
China, US and India generate over half of the $4.8 trillion growth.
The construction sector worldwide currently accounts for more
than 11% of global GDP and the report predicts that it will account
for 13.2% of world GDP by 2020.

38. OPPORTUNITIES:
Without infrastructure growth it is difficult to
achieve target of double digit growth of economy.
Investment in infrastructure in the 12th five year
plan is targeted at around $1 trillion.
Nearly half of the investment will be channelized
into construction projects.
39. Employment Potential:
Construction sector provides direct/indirect employment to
about 35 million people and is expected to employ 92 million
persons by 2022. (50 million additional jobs)
Requirement of human resources for construction (2022)
Engineers 3.72 million
Technicians 4.32 million
Support staff 3.65 million
Skilled workers 23.35 million
Unskilled/ Semi skilled workers 56.96 million
Total Man Power 92 million
40. STRATEGIES :
Skill Development
Improving Coordination and Streamlining Processes
Improving the Competitiveness of Small Units
41. Issues and Challenges
To sustain the growth of the construction sector, a substantial
addition (estimated about 4 million per annum) is necessary to
the workforce in coming years.
Better managed processes are required for the development
and deployment of human resources for this industry.
