The Game Industry The
video game industry includes the design, development, marketing, and sales of video games and interactive experiences across all digital platforms from arcade machines to computers, home and handheld consoles, mobiles and tablets, along with new technologies like virtual reality (VR). Video games are one of the UK’s most important creative industries worth over £4 billion in annual consumer spend. UK Game Industry The UK game industry dates back to the 1970s when home computers were first introduced; since then is has grown into a multi-billion pound sector that is one of the fastest growing in the UK economy, growing by 7% each year. More than 33 million people play video games in the UK, with 57% of us engaging in some way. Girls are just as keen to play as boys with more than 43% of players being female. The growth of mobile applications (Apps) and new technologies like VR, has increased the range and popularity of games worldwide. Where is the UK Game Industry? The video game industry is flourishing across the UK with around 2,000 companies engaged in development, publishing, and distribution. 95% of companies are micro or small businesses with 50 or less employees. More than half of the UK industry (54%) is located in London and the South East, but the Midlands, North of England and Scotland are also major centres, and there are also high concentrations (20+ companies) in Brighton, Cambridge, Cardiff, Surrey, Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford, Sheffield, and Warwickshire. Who Works in Games? It is estimated that 30,000 people work in the UK game industry across roles in development, publishing and retail; approximately 5,000 people are employed in the mobile App development sector alone. The game industry has the youngest workforce in the creative media sector with 68% of employees under 35 years (79% for women), compared with 35% of the UK workforce as a whole. The sector is increasingly diverse with 29% of current Higher Education games course students being female and 22% from a BAME background. In 2014 permanent staff accounted for 84% of jobs, with freelancing lower than in any other creative media sector just at 16%. Getting Qualified & Choosing the Right Course The game industry has a highly qualified workforce with 86% holding a degree. Of these 49% hold a creative media related degree and 29% hold a post-graduate qualification. More than 60 UK universities/colleges provide undergraduate video games courses (+40 masters level courses), with more than 3,000 students studying games related courses each year. Other qualifications common in the game industry include computer programming/ computer science, physics, maths, animation, visual effects (VFX), management, music, art, and design. 14% of employees entered the industry through vocational or alternative non-degree routes but less than 1% entered industry as an apprentice. Game industry apprenticeships are currently in development and are likely to become increasingly popular with employers. The course you choose will need to be industry relevant. Creative Skillset’s ‘Tick’ recognises university courses that have demonstrated their relevance to industry (www.creativeskillset.org/ courses); but whichever route you are planning to follow, look into the destinations of other students who have taken that route before (sites like Linked-In or hiive.co.uk can help). If those you are following are employed in the kind of jobs that interest you, then you are probably on the right track. Develop Yourself Whichever route you choose to follow, developing your skills, experiences, and networks will be just as important as gaining qualifications. Game designers, artists, and programmers can start honing their skills from an early age through the wide availability of free industry- standard software like the Unity and Unreal game engines that will enable you to develop and share your creations through forums, blogs and video sharing sites. All employers will want to see a portfolio of your work or examples of code that you have written in addition to your qualifications. Course leaders will also want to see evidence of your interest prior to admitting you onto a degree course or apprenticeship; so don’t wait to start building your skills and networks. Game Industry Skills and Jobs The skills needed to work in the game industry are broad and varied, with large and small development studios needing different skills to publishers or distributors. In general, the smaller the studio the broader the set of skills that you will need because employees often fulfil a range of jobs which might include design, programming, or even production. The more responsibilities a single person has, the broader the set of skills, knowledge, and experience they require, but also the more scope they will have to develop new skills and impact on the game as a whole. In a larger game development company job roles tend to be more specific like 3D Artist, Shading, or Animation. Employers will want you to excel at something that they really need done well, so don’t spread your skills too broadly and keep developing your main areas of expertise. Roles in business management, publishing, and distribution require administration, legal, finance, marketing, and sales skills in place of the technical and artistic skills demanded in development. Games companies are rarely conventional corporate workplaces, so they can be a great place to grow your career, no matter what interests or expertise you may have. What do Games Employees Earn? The average pay across the game industry is at just over £34,000, however, there are wide variations depending on job role and level of seniority. Lead programmers regularly earn above £50,000, those leading design, art or animation earn an average of £36,000, and senior producers can earn in excess of £50,000. Specialist roles like audio programming ART Concept Artist Uses traditional and digital art skills, like drawing and painting, to bring different aspects of a game idea to life so that other team members have something to work from. Concept artists work at the beginning of the process to visualise initial ideas and throughout the design process, to help generate the style and overall look of a game. 3D Modelling Artist Creates 3D objects such as characters or vehicles using digital modelling and sculpture software like Maya, Modo or ZBrush. Modellers translate concept art into 3D models that meet the technical constraints (poly count, texture, sizes etc.), required by the current game. Environment Artist Brings game worlds to life by creating immersive, believable places for games to be played in. EAs need to understand spatial relationships, apply graphic design principles in 3D, have an excellent understanding of colour and light, as well as knowledge of technical processes like image compression, batching, and poly-count. Special Effects Artists (SFx) Creates anything that moves that isn’t a character or object such as water, dust, explosions or even superpowers. SFx artists use digital art software, alongside traditional visual art concepts, to create realistic effects both stunning like a tornado, and subtle like slow moving clouds. Texturing Artist Creates surface detail and colour on assets like floors and objects through a combination of hand painted, digital, and 3D art.Texturing Artists are highly skilled at adding surface imperfections that give computer models the messy sophistication of the real world (rust, scuffs etc.).Texturing Artists have expert knowledge of colour, lighting, perspective, and materials. ARTISTIC & TECHNICAL Technical Artist Acts as a bridge between artists and programmers to ensure the visual aspects of a game (assets), like characters, scenery and objects, work effectively within the technical limits of the platform being designed for.TAs work with programmers to solve technical problems associated with the visual characteristics of a game.TAs may also undertake complex art or rigging duties, depending upon the size of the studio. Animator Breathes life into creatures and objects (created by 3D/2D artists), so they move and behave realistically, and with personality, to become a believable part of the game world. Animators work with artists and programmers to balance movement and performance on each platform. Game animation is often a complicated combination of different types of movement so animators make extensive libraries of reusable movements for each character. Graphics Programmers Specialists who typically work across both the Engine team and Game teams. They work closely with the art team to ensure the real time rendering of the game meets the game’s intended art style as closely as possible; often requiring a combination of low level engine code and Shaders to achieve the desired results. PROGRAMMING Engine Programmer Engine Programmers create the game engine that forms the technological core of the game including subsystems like input, animation, asset management, and the hardware abstraction layer. This role typically involves a low level mastery of C/C++ and a detailed understanding of game development hardware. Gameplay Programmer Writes the majority of code that controls the player’s interaction with the game to make it enjoyable to play. This requires a good understanding of design, and experience in creating interactive systems. Gameplay programmers need to be resilient, as the game will often change during development and the code they write may be discarded along the way. Physics Programmer Creates software that forms the basis of the game’s simulated world, handling interactions we take for granted such as collisions and movement. Physics programming is a highly specialist area so many companies use physics middleware rather than writing the code themselves. Creating complex simulations (i.e. vehicle handling, fluid or particles), requires programmers with an excellent understanding of physics and maths to achieve the effects required. Artificial Intelligence Programmer (AI) AI describes any action taken by a computer which appears intelligent, and is most commonly used to allow computer controlled characters to make believable decisions. They usually work closely with gameplay programmers and share many of the same skills, since many genres of game rely heavily on AI behaviour for their core gameplay. This means that AI programmers tend to work on a game from start to finish. Tools Engineer Are responsible for creating and maintaining the software to support the smooth running of a game’s development by enabling designers, artists and programmers to do their jobs efficiently. Some studios use externally developed engines such as Unity or Unreal, but others develop their own to meet the needs of their particular game.Typically,Tools Engineers work with the entire team to find the most efficient ways to get data and assets into the game. Audio Programmer Works closely with designers, sound engineers and composers to realise the audio design vision of a game, often developing tools to facilitate this. Games typically require reactive audio responding to the player’s actions, the environment in which the game is set, and to gameplay significant events. Audio programmers are specialists, often musicians and/or with backgrounds in audio engineering. Network Programmer Develops the complex game code and servers behind online multiplayer games and have responsibility for the transmission of data to and from other machines, connected to the hardware running the game. This is one of the most complex areas of game programming as they not only need to have an excellent understanding of game programming, but also of network protocols and client/server architectures. Generalist and Other Programming Roles Whilst each role demands specific knowledge and skills, all programmers can program which means that in principle they are not constrained to any specific role and in fact, some roles exist where breadth is required such as Research and Development (R&D) or Framework Programmers. A team with breadth of experience across roles enables a project’s development to be more agile and in particular, is very desirable in smaller companies. QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA) QA Technician Despite popular belief, QA technicians don’t just get paid to play games all day. QA technicians test specific aspects of a game, write detailed reports on each bug they find, and then re-test when the development team has fixed it. QA technicians need great game stamina as they may play the same part of a game over and over again. An entry-level position often seen as a way into the game industry but further training may be needed to progress to other design or development jobs. Build Engineer Keeps the development process moving by testing code and ensuring there is always a current, de-bugged, version of the game available.Tests the consistency and validity of the game builds, supports workflow, and improves testing and release tools. DESIGN Lead Designer/Creative Director Imaginative and creative leaders who are responsible for the game’s overall vision. They work collaboratively with other team members to create the story, setting, characters and play dynamics of a game. Lead Designers need to clearly communicate ideas to the development team and often play a role in the production process, by pitching ideas to publishers. Gameplay Designer Devises the actions, abilities and mechanics of gameplay, works with the lead designer, plans and defines the rules, modes of play and how characters will respond. Like writing the rules of a very complicated boardgame, this might include how high and how far a character can jump, how long it takes to accelerate to maximum speed, or when you can gain points. They also design how these systems and mechanics evolve over the course of the game as the player progresses through it. Level Designer Creates situations that give the player interesting problems to solve within the constraints of the game’s systems, and mechanics devised by the Gameplay Designer. E.g. in a platform game, the level designer would create the specific layout of various kinds of blocks and enemies in each level to present a new challenge that the player can overcome. User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) Designers UX designers plan what a game communicates with the player to ensure ease of use and player enjoyment. UX designers prevent players getting frustrated by ensuring that the game is giving the necessary feedback effectively and clearly. UX designers use evidence from user feedback and play- tests to continually improve the UX. The User Interface (UI) is how the UX information will be communicated and is the point at which the game and the players interact. UI Designers create the look and characteristics of the heads-up-display (score, lives, levels etc), menus and commands that relay information efficiently and clearly to the players. Narrative Designer / Writer Most video games have a story with a protagonist (main player) and one or more antagonists (opponents). Narrative Designers create the story and structure of a game i.e. who the characters are, how they interact, what the overarching plot is etc. Narrative design is often undertaken by professional writers who are able to write the narrative and script the dialogue. Sound Designer Creates sound effects that enhance and respond to gameplay such as cheering, gunshots or weather effects. Most sound design requires deep knowledge of ‘real-time dynamic playback systems’ that react to the player’s behaviour, the current state of the game, and to a myriad of other context dependent inputs. Sound design requires a lot of collaboration with audio programmers and sometimes the roles are combined. Music Composer Designs, composes and performs music to fit various stages of game play from the game’s theme tune and underscore, to incidental music signalling approaching peril or celebrating the end of a stage, along with motifs for specific characters, announcing their arrival or a changed state of play. Game music composers need to be familiar with popular digital recording software like Logic or Protools, and will need to be able to compose original music from scratch. Music composers usually hold a music degree and often work on a freelance basis. PRODUCTION Game Producer Unlike film, theatre and TV, the role of game producer does not typically have a creative component. Producers are responsible for making sure that projects get delivered on time and on budget. This involves a lot of process management to ensure that all the different streams of work are broken down in detail, allocated, estimated, scheduled, and then tracked against completion. Producers ensure that the project runs smoothly and that no time or money is wasted. Producers are great communicators who are highly organised and good with people. Associate Producer When a project is too big for one producer then additional production staff will be needed, typically these people are known as Associate Producers. The producer will delegate the day-to-day management of schedules and data gathering for some parts of the project to each associate producer and they will report to the producer and communicate with each other to run the project effectively as a team. Publisher Game publishers typically provide the finance for a studio to develop a game and for the game to be brought to market. This can be a very expensive involving building a brand, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and sales. Games are increasingly sold as downloadable content (DLC) with marketplaces like app stores, console stores and Steam reducing the cost and difficulty of publishing so that an increasing number of studios are choosing to self publish. Jobs in publishing are attractive to those with entrepreneurial, marketing, and sales skills. Product Manager / Brand Manager Product Managers work for the game studio, marketing companies or a game publisher to create and deliver marketing campaigns to maximise the sales of a game. Part of a marketing team, they define the market position, develop a launch plan, lead the design of product packaging and marketing materials, and help to organise national or global advertising campaigns. Product Managers work closely with Brand Managers, who are responsible for developing long-term plans for individual game franchises and provide a strategic overview of how a game brand should change over time. Other production roles include data analysts, localisation managers and community managers. command around £55,000 whilst entry-level positions like Quality Assurance Technicians are paid an average of £14,000. Choose a games career that you will love and that is well suited to your skills because you will most likely be working long hours (average 44 hours pw); doing something that you will enjoy and can stay focused on is crucial. The better you become at whatever you do, the greater your earning potential will be. Getting Started in the Industry Most game jobs have several levels of seniority, for example, programming roles may include: • junior programmer (entry level) • programmer • senior programmer • principal programmer (technical) • lead programmer (scheduling/production) There is also a wide range of specialism within each field like character, environment, and texturing artists who may specialise further in 2D or 3D; or have a wider skill set that includes design and animation. Experience is an important step in starting your career; read trade magazines, enter competitions, attend events, and join forums. Being part of a creative community will help you to find opportunities to gain experience and to develop and showcase your skills (try hiive.co.uk). Be enterprising. You could get a customer instead of getting a job. There are lots of ways to use your skills as a freelancer, sole trader or start-up; so don’t overlook setting up by yourself.
