Internship report 2015 yaseen syed
1.
2. INTERNSHIP PRINCIPLES:
During semester 4, I went through various workshops that trained me for my upcoming internship. These
workshops taught me about office behavior, appearances, character and attitude towards working life.
After a long search for a firm to do my internship, I was accepted into Vengesayi Architects, in Harare,
Zimbabwe.
FIRM DESCRIPTION:
Vengesayi Architects is an Architectural Design Studio based in Harare - Zimbabwe. The firm was established
by Mr. M.C.R Vengesayi, an American trained Zimbabwean Architect in March 1987. Vengesayi Architects is
the first Indigenous Architectural Practice to be established in Zimbabwe by a Zimbabwean. It has expanded
rapidly and is now engaged in projects valued over US$600 million. By volume of work, it is considered one of
the largest and busiest practices in Zimbabwe. As an expanding institution, Vengesayi Architects continues to
strive in a unique way to the needs of society, by incorporating various new techniques in the field of
architecture. Projects done range from design proposals to completing interiors and managing projects.
PERSONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Throughout my internship with Vengesayi Architects, I was involved in almost all the projects that the firm was
working on, as my supervisor wanted me to get a full understanding of how projects were handled in the real
world. From design process, to working drawings, to site visits and meetings and final presentations.
3. PROJECT 1: TOBACCO INDUSTRY MARKETING BOARD (TIMB) WEEK1-WEEK 7
TIMB aims to be the new headquarters for the Tobacco Industry and marketing board of Zimbabwe.
When I was introduced to the firm’s ongoing project,TIMB was already in the construction phase. After reading
the project files and watching the design presentation, I was given the task of browsing through the
architectural drawings and contracts between the client (TIMB) and the main contractor (DRAWCARD
CONSTRUCTION) as well as the contract between the main contractor and the subcontractor (SCOTIA
STEEL), to widen my understanding of the project. Apart from the TIMB project, I browsed through the
company’s other completed projects and familiarized myself with book keeping.
During my internship I attended all the site meetings where I met with all the subcontractors and main
contractor for TIMB .I went to site regularly where I learnt more about the building.
I was asked to make observations and to take minutes during the site meetings. I documented the minutes in
the form of a meeting agenda, which was sent out to all the sub contractors and main contractor as a progress
update from the previous site meeting, as well as an invitation to the upcoming site meetings.
Site meetings with subcontractors and main contractors were conducted after every two weeks on
Mondays, while site visits were conducted once every week on Thursday.
The site meeting was an eye opener on how to manage a meeting without any discretion. I learnt how to
handle obstacles in a professional manner. I managed to multi task and filter information that was useful and
meaningful to the architects. It also helped me document valid information in a professional manner. Along with
minutes and site meetings, I also assisted the other technicians with orthographic drawings for the
headquarters, such as the balustrade designs.
Usually site assessments were carried out on behalf of the client. While on site I was introduced to the local
authorities, the water supply (City Council), where he briefed us on the current progress. The main contractor
(Draw card Construction) was always present on site, where they gave us a tour of the construction progress
after the New Year had started.
4. TASKS:
To take photos as observations on site visits.
To take down minutes during site meetings.
Document these site meeting minutes in the form of reports and email them to all subcontractors.
Other subcontractors were also present on site, such as Scotia Steel, Delomic and Creative Systems, their
requirements were noted down to fulfill. While on site, one of the observations I made was that of the fire
systems of the building. There were some systems such as the hose reels that needed to be replaced as they
were not positioned well and were of weak quality. Below is an image of the weak hose reel.

6. See attached :
TIMB SITE MEETING 49 MINUTES
TIMB SITE MEETING 50B MINUTES
TIMB SITE MEETING 51 MINUTES
CHALLENGES:
During the site meetings, it was sometimes difficult to keep up with the subcontractors as they spoke, therefore
I resorted to recording the meeting minutes, so I could document my findings accurately.
7. Below are the balustrade details which I assisted in cadding:
10. PROJECT 2: CHISIPITE CLUSTER HOMES, WEEK2-WEEK7
While working on TIMB, I was asked to propose designs for a plot in an area called Chisipite.I was asked to
produce two cluster home designs. I first went for a site visit to conduct a thorough analysis which I used to
design my homes. I began to design along the site, keeping in mind the site circulation and existing walls and
slopes and sections.
Chisipite cluster homes, is a huge ongoing project for a couple of months. While it is still in its design stage, I
was given an opportunity to produce my own designs as per my will for the site. I was given full liberty to
design according to my understanding. My design involved creating spaces for a family. I went on to design my
house, with 5 bedrooms with ensuite toilets, a kitchen, living rooms, and recreational spaces. Along with my
site analysis I also presented conceptual drawings and hand rendered sketches to help me develop my initial
ideas.
11. After producing various designs I had a crit session with my supervisors who advised me on how to improve
my designs and they selected one which I was to work on and improve for the upcoming weeks. When my
designs were finally amended and approved I was asked to take a step forward and produce 3d models and
renders.
After this I went on to placing my house onto the site, and managed to create a neighbourhood of 48 houses,
with recreational spaces, such as jogging treks, children play grounds, and swimming pools.
For this particular project I was asked to produce 3d renders using a different software called Archicad. While
learning Archicad, I was also taught the rendering software of Artlantis, using this software, I rendered and
added effects to my designs. As I explored the softwares more, I got a better understanding on how to create
more appealing renders and images for a better presentation.
I presented quite a few 3d renders to my supervisors who were extremely pleased with my adaption to the
software.Once I was done with the modelling stage, I began working on my construction/working
drawings, and then I moved on to annotating finishes.
MODELING OF SINGLE STOREY IN ARCHICAD. (Design 2- SINGLE STOREY).CHISIPITE CLUSTER
HOMES.
12. As for what I have gained during this experience, I learned to read hand sketches properly and not to
jump to cadding straight away, until the spaces are fully thought out and logical. I managed to
improve my 3D modeling and AutoCAD skills (being faster with shortcuts) and also I have learned a
lot from Mr. Ngoni Chimhau himself, on things concerning to or unrelated to architecture.
13. Below are a few renders I did, during the initial stage.
14. After completing all the drawings, renders, and site analysis, I documented my work in the form of a
presentation booklet, which was to be passed on to the principal architects, Mr and Mrs. Vengesayi
for consideration.
(See attached my booklet which was submitted to the principal architects)
During this time, I also modeled a completed project by Vengesayi Architects, to improve my Archicad and
Artlantis skills. It was a double storey bungalow done for a client 6 months ago. The bungalow is currently
under construction. The modelling for the house are as follows:
15. PROJECT 3: VICTORIA FALLS -“ULTRACITY” FUEL STATION, WEEK8
For my final project, I was asked to work on the site analysis of Victoria Falls, (Location: Corner Bulawayo
Road and Mkhosana township turn off).
After working on the site analysis, I presented it to my supervisor, who was satisfied with my research, and
gave me some tips and tricks to use in the future, on how to use the site to my advantage when designing.
Although I am not going to be able to be part of the entire project, and experience the design and construction
process, I am glad I participated in the initial stages of site analysis. As this allowed me to conduct a
survey/analysis on a completely different climate from Malaysia’s. I learnt how to tackle site related issues in a
different manner altogether.
(See attached VICTORIA FALLS SITE ANALYSIS PRESENTATION)
16. CONCLUSION:
Apart from all the projects I was assigned, I have also learnt how to cooperate in a team to ensure
that all works and deadlines are met and completed with excellence. I have also gained knowledge
on working and tender drawing formats and also had the opportunity of getting to know new people.
I was exposed to a new environment and learnt my way around things with the support of all my
colleagues, who made me feel extremely welcome and ensured that I had a wonderful
experience. They made sure my 8 weeks were productive and beneficial for me,in that they taught me
how to work in a working class environment and also made me see and realize the mistakes I may
have made as a student.
I can say without doubt that I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would like to experience working life
under Vengesayi Architects again in the future.
