A whole ‘1’ split into pieces
You can think of the whole one as a
Pizza or cake split into a number of slices
The bottom number tells how many slices in the pizza

5. Other Fractions
• The top number tells you
• How many slices you have

6. ‘Official’ Names
The TOP number is called the
NUMERATOR
The BOTTOM number is called the
DENOMINATOR

7. Some Fractions are the ‘same’
One half equals two quarters equals four eigths
What do you notice about the bottom numbers?
They are all multiples of two

8. Another Name
Fractions that are the same are called
EQUIVALENT fractions.
